New DVDs: 'There Will Be Blood,' 'Dewey Cox'

Also New: 'The Water Horse: Legend Of The Deep'

POSTED: 2:54 pm EDT April 11, 2008

Here's a look at some of the new films on DVD this week:

'There Will Be Blood' (R): Acting genius Daniel Day-Lewis rivals, if not bests, his Oscar-winning performance in "My Left Foot" and Oscar-robbed turn in "Gangs of New York" in "There Will Be Blood" -- a far better movie than its Oscar competitor that went on to win the 2007 Best Picture trophy, "No Country For Old Men."

Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, a struggling silver miner who accidentally discovers oil and becomes obsessed in his strive to secure his future in the business as shrewd Texas prospector.

Trying to convince naïve small-town residents to let him drill oil on their land, Plainview meets his match in Eli Sunday (Paul Dano in a frightening performance), a fanatic teenage preacher bent on saving the oil baron's soul amid a volatile crash between capitalism and religion.

While this turn-of-the-century oil boom drama from director Paul Thomas Anderson ("Boogie Nights," "Magnolia") is too long and a bit too smart for its own good at times (the first 15 minutes of the film borders on being a pretentious exercise in filmmaking), at least it has a satisfying ending -- unlike the rambling, highfalutin conclusion that ruined an otherwise riveting "No Country For Old Men." While "There Will Be Blood" is artsy, it's still accessible to the average moviegoer.

DVD Features: "The Story of Petroleum," a 1920s black and white silent movie about the oil business; a production featurette and more. (Paramount Home Entertainment)

'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story' (R/Unrated Versions): It's hard to figure out why moviegoers were out of tune with "Dewey Cox" during its brief theatrical run in December, especially considering it's the latest offering from the mind of comedy genius Judd Apatow.

Apatow and Jake Kasdan ("Orange County") co-write and co-produce the film (Kasdan also directs) about the greatest musician who never was, Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly), mocks such recent music-themed film hits as "Walk the Line" and "Ray."

Reilly plays Cox as an overgrown 14-year-old and older, who, like Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line," is followed by the death of a brother in his youth. Rising to the top and stumbling headfirst into the temptations of the road -- sampling drugs, cheating on his wife and falling for the love of his life, Darlene (Jenna Fischer) -- Dewey walks hard from one misadventure into the next.

Loaded with bawdy humor and music that's actually pretty good for what it is, "Walk Hard" is a comedy that's sure to pick up a cult following on DVD. Reilly, who proved he had pipes as Renee's Zellweger's simpleton husband in "Chicago," rocks out and is blisteringly funny as Cox, while Fischer, who wonderfully underplays Dunder Mifflin's secretary on "The Office" plays Darlene (her June Carter to Dewey's Johnny Cash), plays her character to perfection.

Fans of "The Office" as well as "Saturday Night Live" will surely get a kick, too, out of several cameos and small roles from the ensembles' cast members.

Some of the comedy in "Dewey Cox" is repetitive, and at times, perhaps too over the top. But then again, the film's purpose is not to mimic the subtle comedy mock rocumentary "Spinal Tap," but to turn its amps up past 11 and blow the laughs out of the water. That's especially the case with the unrated version of the film in the two-disc edition, the hilariously-titled "American Cox: The Unbearably Long, Self-Indulgent Director's Cut." Get ready for a full frontal assault -- sometimes quite literally.

DVD Features: Commentary by Apatow, Kasdan, Reilly and executive producer Lew Morton, deleted and extended scenes, eight full song performances, production featurettes and more. (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)

'The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep' (PG): The story of the Loch Ness Monster gets told from a unique perspective in "The Water Horse," a magical tale from director Jay Russell ("My Dog Skip") that gives one explanation of how the legendary creature came to be in Scotland.

Alex Etel stars as Angus, a lonely boy who longs for the return of his military father during World War II. He finds friendship in the creature that hatches from an egg that he discovered on the coast of the Loch -- a prehistoric-like amphibian that grows into the Loch Ness Monster.

What makes "The Water Horse" fun and unique is that it melds fiction with real-life claims, such as the story behind one of the most famous photographs of the monster. The special effects that bring the monster to life are spectacular, but they never outweigh a fine slate of performances by Etel and his co-stars, including Ben Chaplin and Emily Watson. While young kids will delight in the playfulness of the monster in its infancy, there are some instances when the creature gets older that may be too intense.

Overall, it's a clean, thoughtful and entertaining family film that doesn't rely on stupid tricks to get its audience engaged.

DVD Features: Virtual game where you can raise the Water Horse from a baby; deleted scenes, production featurette and more. (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)
