Washington, DC -- Georgetown head football coach Bob Benson resigned on Tuesday.Benson was at the helm of the program for 13 years, guiding Georgetown to a 72-64 record in that span. "We are grateful for Bob's service and guidance during his time here," Hoyas athletics director Bernard Muir said. "He guided the program when we first started at the I-AA level (1993) and to our current spot in the Patriot League. We wish him well in his future pursuits." While playing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Hoyas became one of the top teams in the league, posting a 39-13 mark from 1995-99. Georgetown went 9-2 in 1998 and 1999, respectively, tying the school record for wins in a season. However, after the 1999 campaign the program has been on a steady downward spiral. The team has not had a winning record in the last six years, going 24-42 over that span, including 4-7 this past season. Most of that time coincides with the team's move into the Patriot League, which came in 2001. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
