Give a Bark for a Clean State Park The CT River Coastal Conservation District is launching a campaign to address pet waste a Chatfield Hollow. “Give a Bark for a Clean State Park,” a district initiated education and outreach campaign about the health and environmental risks associated with dog waste. The program is focused on Chatfield Hollow State Park and developed with the state Department of Environmental Protection. There are five new pet waste disposal stations to be installed at the park and educational materials to be distributed to area veterinarian offices and pet stores. Summer Basketball League Every summer, the top local high school basketball players, NBA players and pros playing overseas gather to bring the community together at Lewis Fox Middle School gymnasium in Hartford. This year, the games will be played at 6 p.m., August 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 11, 2007. The games are free. Catch rising stars and local legends at they lace ‘em up for the community. Some of the well known players include Ryan Gomes, Tebucky Jones, Vin Baker, Jared Jordan, Edmond Saunders, Taliek Brown, Tyson Wheeler and more. Information, www.ghpaonline.com.

Citizens Police Academy Beginning September 5, 2007, the Bristol Police Department will host a nine-week Citizens Police Academy. Participants will tour the station, learn about different types of police equipment and participate in practical skill sessions. With the exception of October 31, classes will meet in the department’s training room from 6:30 and 9 p.m., every Wednesday concluding on November 14. The program is free. Other lessons include patrol procedures, criminal investigations including fingerprinting and crime scene processing methods. Classes are open to those over 21 who either reside or work in Bristol and have no misdemeanor arrests in the last two years and no history of felony arrests. Enrollment is limited and all applicants include a background check. Application deadline is 5 p.m., August 17. Applications are available at the police department. Plant Science Day The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station will hold its 97th annual Plant Science Day open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., August 1, 2007, at Lockwood Farm, Kenwood Avenue, Hamden. The featured program will begin at 11:15 a.m. in the main tent. F. Philip Prelli, Commissioner, CT Department of Agriculture, will give the Samuel W. Johnson Memorial lecture entitled “Connecticut Agriculture – The Local Flavor at about 11:40 a.m. Other speakers are scheduled throughout the afternoon on a variety of subjects. There will also be barn displays on a range of topics and about 70 field plots and exhibits available for viewing. Admission and parking are free. Twilight Lawn Concert A Twilight Lawn Concert at Roseland Cottage, Route 169, Woodstock, will be held at 7 p.m., August 1, 2007. This free concert, sponsored by the Woodstock Recreation Committee, will feature the Little Big Band Band, a 15-piece swing band performing traditional and contemporary big band swing.. Summer Arts Festival Don’t miss the Summer Production and Arts Festival by Hartford tees as they present “Don’t Just Talk…Say Something,” a look at the past, present and future with song, dance and poetry. Cariglia Memorial Golf Tournament The Jeff Cariglia Memorial Golf Tournament will be played August 2, 2007, at Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug in Baltic. This is the 10th annual tournament to celebrate the life and honor the memory of Michael J. Cariglia and to benefit the golf scholarship in his name at the University of Connecticut. He died of cancer at the age of 40 in 1997. He was an avid golfer and a club champion at both Pautipaug and Willimantic country clubs. The “Four Man Best Ball” festivities begin at 11 a.m. and will include along-drive contest and lunch. The shotgun star is at 12:30 p.m. Following play will be an awards dinner, raffle and silent auction of sports memorabilia. Entry fee is $200, sponsor opportunities available. Enfield Italian Festival The Enfield Italian Festival returns this week for another year at the Mt. Carmel Fairgrounds on Park Avenue. On August 2 there will be a candlelight procession beginning at 8 p.m. Free refreshments. On August 3, the festival will be open from 6 to 11 p.m. and will feature food, fun, music and more. Sound Alternative provides the music and the Fabulous Galaxies and Yellow Brick Road will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. Air-conditioned, smoke-free bingo will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. and a special landing of the Black Hawk Helicopter will land at the festival that night. Tours will be provided. New Britain Rock Cats road team will be available for autographs. Admission is free. On August 4, gates open at 6 p.m. Joey Dee’s All-Star Rock ‘n Roll Review will perform from 8:30 to 11 p.m. and the Fabulous Galaxies and Yellow Brick Road plays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Bingo. On August 5, there will be an outdoor Mass at 8:30 a.m. at the fairgrounds followed by a procession through the neighborhood. Festival gates open at 6 p.m. with the Jimmy Vega Show on until closing. Bingo from 6 to 10 p.m. The annual greased pole competition will be held as well as the Third Annual Sauce Competition. Wrist bands will be available for the carnival rides for $17 per person. End Child Abuse Rally On August 3 there will be a rally on the Waterbury Green to bring attention to the sexual abuse of children. It will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come, especially survivors of child sexual abuse. There will be music by BLUDRUM and the rally will end with a candlelight ceremony. “Each One-Reach One,” is the simple concept of the rally.

Summer Jazz Program On August 3, The Neighborhood Music School’s Summer Jazz Program concludes its City of New Haven Office of Cultural Affairs and the New Haven Public Library’s “Looking at Jazz” documentary film and live performance series. The performance is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. and highlights the talents of over 35 students and faculty members in the Temple Street Plaza, across from the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale. The screening of the documentary “Benny Goodman: Adventures in the Kingdom of Swing,” explores the life of the King of Swing; his music will follow. In case of rain, the performance and film will be moved to the Neighborhood Music School, 100 Audubon Street, New Haven. All events are free and open to the public.

USO Care Packages Residents of Hamden may purchase USO Care Packages for US troops overseas from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., August 3, 2007, at Hamden High School, The USO Care packages are the only care packages sanctioned by the Dept. of Defense and contain phone cards, disposable cameras, toiletries and more. They are valued at $75 but are for sale for $25 each, tax deductible. Care packages may be sent with a personalized message in honor of or in memory of a military person or sent anonymously. Musical Performance in Newtown Newtown High School students in grades seven to 11 will perform on stage a journey into musical theatre. The performance will be held at 7 p.m., August 3, 2007, at Newtown High School. Tickets are $10 each and are on sale now. Call 203-426-1787. They will perform such musical hits such as “If I Loved You” from “Carousel”; “I’m Not that Smart,” from “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee;” and “A New Life” from Jekyl and Hyde,” among many others. Since July 16, the students have been developing skills through improvisation and movement games, challenging vocal techniques and investigation of all technical aspects of putting on a production.

Chill Out Music Fest The Chill Out Music Fest will be held every Saturday until October 1, 2007, from 1 to 4 p.m., at 70 Sanford Street in Fairfield, sponsored by the Fairfield Theatre Company. Admission is free. There will be great bands, great food and drinks, a bouncy castle for children and a cool, frosty tent for everyone. The parking lot has been turned into a neighborhood party. Bring the family for live music – rock, blues, reggae, Irish, funk and more. All ages are welcome. A rib-eating contest will be held on August 25.

Glastonbury Antiques Festival The 34th annual Glastonbury Antiques Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., August 4, 2007, on the Glastonbury Town Green, Hubbard and Main streets, Sponsored by the Glastonbury Historical Society, the event will feature 65 juried, New England-based antiques dealers who offer a diversified selection of vintage and antique items. All proceeds assist in supporting the society’s continued mission to preserve Glastonbury heritage through on-going educational programs and museum exhibits as well as maintenance of the society’s three historical properties. Community Clean-Up Day Join neighbors and local businesses for a community clean-up event in preparation for Meriden’s National Night Out. The event will premier Duerrstein’s original paintings, drawings and limited edition giclees on canvas. He will personally dedicate artwork purchases during the opening day event. Butterflies, Beetles, Bugs and More Explore the world of insects with University of Connecticut entomologists Maxi Polihronakis and Suegene Noh and learn how to identify various species and understand how insect biology and behavior affect agriculture, the medicines we use, the engineering field and humankind’s survival. The program will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, August 4, 2007, in the Mansfield area. Cruise to Benefit Melanona Research The sixth annual cruise to benefit the Melanoma Research Foundation will be held from noon to 5 p.m., August 4, 2007, at the Don Mallon Dealership, 774, West Thames Street, Route 32, Norwich. Rain date is August 5. All proceeds will be donated to Melanoma Research Foundation in honor of the late Kathy Domijan who lost her battle with melanoma in October 2001. 48th Annual Country Fair The 48th annual Country Fair at the Congregational Church in Killingworth will be held August 3 and 4, 2007, on the church grounds, 273 Route 81, just north of the traffic circle in Killingworth. The event begins with a chicken barbecue dinner under the tent August 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. The menu features barbecued chicken, several side dishes, pie, soft drinks and coffee. There will also be a classic car show featuring vintage vehicles of the Shoreline Recycled Teenage Cruisers auto club with music provided by Rockin's Richard. NLCS Relay for Life The ninth annual NLCS Relay for Life Walk will be held at Stonington High School, Pawcatuck, from 11 a.m. to 11 a.m., August 4 and 5, 2007. Opening ceremonies and a survivor reception will follow the opening lap. Entertainment for all ages will be provided during the entire 24 hours. Amber Alert will be present to register children. RiverDog Music Festival The RiverDog Music Festival will be held August 4 and 5, 2007, at the Chester Fairgrounds, Route 154 off exit 6, Route 9, in Chester. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., August 4 and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., August 5, 2007. Admission is $18 for one day and $28 for a two-day pass. Touch a Truck Touch a Truck, Car Show and More will be held from noon to 5 p.m., August 5, 2007, at Fairfield Hills, left off exit 11 off I-84 in Fairfield. Sponsored by Canine Advocates, the show will feature a police car, police motorcycle, police K-9 car, fire trucks, tractor, excavator, cherry picker, underwater search and rescue vehicle, army trucks, dump truck backhoe, police crime prevention and safety booth, information on the child id program, demonstration by a K-9 dog, service dogs, baby goats and alpacas. Maple Syrup Farmers’ Market The Coventry Regional Farmers’ Market will feature a program on making maple syrup August 5, 2007. The market is held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is located on the grounds of the Connecticut Museum of Glass in Coventry, North River Road and Boston Turnpike. Bob Dubois of Bats of Bedlam Farm will talk about making maple syrup from sap to syrup. The market will also feature ripe tomatoes, early apples and pears, nectarines, plums, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, peaches, raspberries, sweet corn, new potatoes, summer squash, beans, beets, baby lettuce, eggplant, peppers, goat’s milk cheese, chocolate chip cookies and more. Middletown High Fundraiser A scholarship fundraiser in memory of Christine Marshall LaRosa, a Middletown High School Spanish teacher who died in June, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., August 8, 2007, at Cold Stone Creamery in Middletown. Proceeds will benefit two scholarships in her name at Middletown High School.

’Wait ‘til 8’ Event “Wait ‘til 8,” for families to participate in events from 4 to 8 p.m., August 8, 2007, at the SmartLiving Center, 297 Boston Post Road, Orange. The free events include a scavenger hunt, giveaways on the 8sm education and energy-saving activities. Health Fair in Hartford The Hispanic Health Council will hold a health fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., August 9, 2007, at South Green Park in Hartford. There will be free health screenings, health information, free raffles, great prizes, give-away bags and entertainment.

Stuff a Bus There is an urgent need for food at the Sterling House Food Pantry and Stratford Day, both in Stratford. To help, Durham Student Services will hold a "Stuff a Bus" event from 2 to 10 p.m., August 10 and from 8 a.m. to 4 .m., August 11, 2007, at 2283 Main Street, Stratford. Non-perishable food items, sundries such as paper towels, toilet paper, soap and gift cards from Stop and Shop, Shaws and Shop Rite, personal care items for babies and adults, plastic grocery bags, tuna, chicken, ham in cans, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, hot and cold breakfast cereals, boxes of mashed potatoes, Rice-a-Roni products, canned soup, vegetables, fruit, single-serve items such as raviolo, corned beef hash aned chili.

Community Health Fair The Community Health Center of New Britain will host a Back to School Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., August 10, 2007, at the Community Health Center, 1 Washington Square, New Britain. There will be various community agencies providing immunizations, screenings, blood pressure checks and children’s dental screenings. There will also be information on lead prevention, HUSKY insurance and more. Activities include raffles, face-painting and balloon animals. It is free and open to the public. Ambulance Fundraiser A Car-Bike-Truck Show to benefit a new ambulance for the Stony Hill Fire Department will be held at 11 a.m., August 11, 2007, at 59 Stony Hill Road, Bethel. Admission is free for the public and $10 per vehicle entry. Organized by Hot Rods Inc., the show will feature vendors, the Hot Rods Inc. Wild Horse and Burro Adoption The US Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Land Management will hold a wild horse and burro adoption at the Horsebarn Hill Arena at the University of Connecticut, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., August 11 with remaining animals available from 8 a.m. to noon, August 12, 2007. Preview is from 1 to 5 p.m., August 10. For only $125, participants can take home a young mustang or burro from the western rangelands. Gentled wild horses in the eastern United States are used for dressage, trail riding, western events and other disciplines. Burros are great companion animals and are sometimes used by farmers for predator control. The event is open to spectators at no charge. Fair and Flea Market Winchester Grange will hold its annual Grange Fair and Flea Market on the Winchester Green from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., August 11, 2007. See the area’s best fruits, vegetables and baked goods. Buy some summer reading at the book sale and visit the flea market on the Green. There will also be children’s games and food including gourmet hot dogs. There is still time to enter an exhibit or to sign up for the flea market . Softball Tournament in Manchester A softball tournament to benefit “Charlotte’s Rae of Hope,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., August 11, 2007, at the ballfields on New State Road, Manchester. There will be fresh baked goods, hotdogs and hamburgers, soft drinks, entertainment, pony rides, raffles and more. Charlotte is a three-week old baby suffering from a rare form of cancer. And all proceeds will be placed in trust for Charlotte and her family. Information, 860-742-8811.

’Kickin’ It on the Green’ Rushford’s annual “Kickin’ It on the Green,” a free event designed to provide healthy, fun activities for children and families, will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., August 11, 2007, at Union Park in Middletown. This year’s event will focus on educating the public on underage drinking. Performers, activity booths, information tables, food vendors and an inflatable jumping area for children are just some of the activities planned. More than 400 residents attended the 2006 event. 'Off the Wall' Celebrates 15"Off the Wall," turns 15 years old on August 12, 2007, and the Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents the 15th annual photography exhibition and fundraising event at Studio 70, located on the first floor of 70 Audubon Street in New Haven. This year it promises to be bigger and better than ever. Whale Watch Trip The Connecticut Museum of Natural History will host its annual whale watch trip from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., August 18, 2007. Household Hazardous Waste Collection The Metropolitan District Commission will resume Household Hazardous Waste Collections August 18 and will run them until November 3. The MDC invites residents from Simsbury and other eligible towns to empty their homes of hazardous wastes from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., August 18, 2007. Painter, Sculpture Exhibits in Kent Recent works by renowned painter Carroll Macdonald and a collection of sculptures by the late Paul Suttman will be exhibited at the Morrison Gallery, 8 Old Barn Road, Kent beginning August 25 and through September 23, 2007. The Macdonald paintings are primarily oils done in the past few years and focus on landscapes inspired by Litchfield County. Macdonald is a resident of neighboring Bridgewater. MADD Dash 5K The 16th annual MADD Dash 5K Run will be held in memory of Caryn Eng and all victims of alcohol-related crashes on August 25, 2007.
