Irish Baseball Exhibit “Celebrating 150 Years of Connecticut’s Irish Baseball,” an exhibit about Connecticut’s Irish and the game of baseball, will run through September 14, 2007, at the Ethnic Heritage Center, 270 Fitch Street, New Haven, on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University. Silent No More Auction The second annual Prudence Crandall Silent No More Auction and Reception will be held June 1, 2007, at Central Connecticut State University. Garbology at UConn Akeia Benard of the anthropology department at the University of Connecticut, will conduct a program on Garbology – the study of what people leave behind or throw out. It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, June 2, 2007, at the CT State Museum of Natural History on the campus of the University of Connecticut. By studying these things, you can learn a lot about how people live. In this workshop, visitors will examine a week’s worth of trash thrown out by several households to learn about the families’ size, behaviors, likes and dislikes and more. Firefighters' Competition and Family Fun Day Old Saybrook Fire Company No. 1 will hold its first Firefighters' Competition and Family Fun Day June 3, 2007, at Clark Memorial Field (Firemen's Field) on Elm Street, Old Saybrook. Tiffany Farms Benefit in Lyme Tiffany Farms in one of the most painted landscapes in the state. Laurel Festival in Winsted The 73rd Laurel Festival will be held June 8, 9 and 10, 2007, in Winsted. A Sidewalk Café will be held June 8 at the Winsted Knights of Columbus where contestants for the Laurel Queen crown are introduced for the first time. Admission is $5 and the evening includes a DJ, with pizza and refreshments available. On June 9, a family event will be held in East End Park, Route 44, with vendors and activities for both children and adults. Band Organ Rally The Carousel Organ Association of American will stage a national Band Organ Rally June 30 and July 1 at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury starting at noon each day. Open to the public, the event is free. More than 20 organs from throughout the nation are registered to play the “happiest music on Earth,” for the two-day event. Living Well Health Fair A Living Well Health Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 30, 2007, at the Faith Congregational Church, 2030 Main Street, Hartford. Arts and Crafts Fair St. Mary’s Church of the Visitation 16th arts and crafts fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 30, 2007, on the Liberty Green at Route 1 and Liberty Street, Clinton. 84th Scottish Festival The 84th Scottish Fun Family Festival (Ceilidh) will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., June 30, 2007, at the 177-acre Cranbury Park, Norwalk. Scottish descendents or “wannabees” are invited to attend and enjoy the kilts, bagpipes, drums, fiddle music, highland and country dancing, clan tartans, heavy athle6tics including the tossing of the caber and amateur athletics for the audience including the children’s seven-per-team tug-o-wars and other activities. There will ample food and drink available as well as vendors with Scottish merchandise. Bring a lawn chair and spend the day. The event ends in a grand finale with the massing of the bands. Admission is $15, $10 for seniors ages 62 and older and children ages five to 12.
Caterpillars to Kimonos Caterpillars to Kimonos – Spectacular Silk is the title of a program to be presented from 10 a.m. to noon, June 30, 2007, at the CT State Museum of Natural History on the campus of the University of Connecticut, Storrs. It will be conducted by Ann Galonska, director of the Mansfield Historical Society and will focus on the history of silk in Connecticut. Visitors will be able to reel silk fibers from real silkworm cocoons as they did in ancient China 4,600 years ago. The program is for adults and children age 6 and older. Mark Catalina Art Exhibit It has been a year since Mark Catalina, one of Connecticut new talented artists, suffered a series of strokes which left him near death. Last year Catalina was honored with a major one-man exhibit of his paintings at the New Britain Museum of American Art and in the Lascano Gallery in Great Barrington, Mass. He will return to the local art scene with an exhibition “Jung at Heart” which features a variety of his paintings, drawings and prints including his new “Soft Bodies” series which he has created from his wheelchair. Coventry Fest 2007 Coventry Fest 2007 is planned for June 30, 2007, at Patriots Park, 124 Lake Street. Benefit Gala in Guilford The Once in a Blue Moon Gala will be held from 6:30 to 11 p.m., June 30, 2007, at a private Guilford home to benefit the Guilford Art Center.
