Fireworks in Milford Westfield CT Post Mall and the Milford Chamber of Commerce will host “Honoring Our Heroes,” a night of appreciation for the armed forces and a fireworks display July 1, 2007, beginning at 6 p.m. with the fireworks at 9 p.m. The event will be held on the top level of Westfield CT Post’ Green Parking Garage, Boston Post Road, off I-95, exit 39B. This summertime block party will be complete with food, games, rides and entertainment. Free US flags will be distributed while supplies last and there will be a chance to win a $20,000 Westfield shopping spree. There will also be displays from all the branches of the services. Rain date is July 8.

Art Gallery Highlights St. Joseph College Art Gallery presents a selection of highlights from its permanent collection including 20th century American paintings and contemporary prints. Featured paintings include works by Georgia O’Keefe, Milton Avery, Anthony Thieme and Aurelia Calonesco. Contemporary works by Jacob Lawrence, Miriam Schapiro and Faith Ringgold will also be displayed. The exhibit is currently running and will be on view through July 29. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursdays; and from 1 to 4 p.m., Sundays. Admission is free.

Vineyard Festival at Farmers’ Market The Vineyard Festival at the Coventry Farmers’ Market will celebrate Connecticut wines and cheeses. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 1, 2007, at the market, on the grounds of the Ct Glass Museum at the intersection of North River Road and Boston Turnpike. Emerging Artists Art SaleEight fine artists qill display and sell their work over the holiday period through July 4, at the Hadlyme Public Hall, located near Gillette Castle and the Chester Ferry. The artists, Patty Alves of Higganum, Fred Antonio of Middletown, Yvonne Brickey of Middletown, Dawn Brindle of Salem, Greg Dondero of Cromwell, Linda Elgart of Hadlyme, Jen Hart of East Haddam and Dr. Ellie Pringle of Higganum, will donate a portion of the sales to the Restoration Fund of the Hadlyme Public Hall. SVFD 125th Anniversary This year marks the 125th anniversary of the Shelton Volunteer Fire Department, Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Co. #1, and the event will be marked with a parade at 6 p.m., July 3, 2007, from Kneet Street to Coram Avenue to White Street to Howe Avenue with fireworks to follow.

Boom Box Parade The annual Willimantic Boom Box Parade will be held at 11 a.m., July 4, 2007, from Jilson Square, downtown Willimantic. Anyone can march or enter a float. Formation begins at 9 a.m.

Fireworks at Long Wharf Fireworks in New Haven will begin at dusk on July 4, 2007, from Long Wharf Park, exit 46 off I-95. Information, 203-946-7821.

July 4 Parade The annual Independence Day parade in Barkhamsted will be held at 10:30 a.m., July 4, 2007, along West River Road to the Barkhamsted School.

Great American Boom in New Britain The 13th annual Great American Boom will be held July 4, 2007, at Stanley Quarter Park, 2159 Stanley Street, New Britain, beginning at 5 p.m. The annual event will have live music, carnival games, a petting zoo and clowns. Fried Dough Eating Contest New England’s First Fried Dough Eating Contest will be held at 8 p.m., July 4, 2007, on the grounds of Torrington Middle School, 200 Middle School Drive, Torrington. Brian’s Fabulous Fried Dough and the Torrington Recreation Department are sponsoring the event. The contest will allow each competitor to have one coach. First prize is $1,000 with second and third prizes of $300 and $100 respectively. There will also be a raw dough throw for boys and girls in two different age categories and a raw dough toss for boys and girls up to age 12 with the winners receiving two-day passes for Six Flags.

July 4 Celebration The 51st July 4 July Jamboree will be held July 4, 2007, on the East Woodstock Common. An old-fashioned celebration featuring a chicken barbecue will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by the parade at 2 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy live entertainment, children’s games, contests, food and more. Parking and admission are free. Proceeds benefit the East Woodstock Congregational Church which held its first jamboree in 1957. Proceeds support the church programs of education, music and community outreach.

Regional YMCA Triathlon The YMCA Spirit Triathlon will be held beginning at 8:30 a.m., July 4, 2007, in Brookfield, sponsored by the Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut. This USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned event features a 500-meter pool swim, a 20k hilly bike ride and a 5k flat run. Individuals and relay teams are invited to participate. Awards will be given to the top three individuals, the top relay team and to individuals in each age group. Fire Department Carnival The Windsor Locks Volunteer Fire Department annual carnival will be held beginning at 6 p.m., July 5, 6, and 7, 2007, at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Southwest Avenue, Windsor Locks. July 5 is Polka Night featuring Lenny Gomulka and Chicago Push playing from 6 to 9 p.m.; July 6 is the annual fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. with rain date of July 7; July 7 is the annual parade at 6:15 p.m. from the Public Safety Complex to Elm Street to Southwest Avenue. Concerts in Coe Park The Family Concert Series in Coe Park will present Bob Bloom with a program entitled “Drumming About You” at 6:30 p.m., July 5, 2007, at the park in downtown Torrington. Annual tag Sale in Manchester Odiyana Buddhist Center’s 4th annual tag sale will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., July 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 7, and from 8 to 11 a.m., July 8, 2007, at the Buddhist Center, 805 Hartford Road, Manchester. Admission is free but there is a $5 early bird charge on July 6. July 8 is fill-a-bag day for $10 per bag. A free meditation class will be held at 11 a.m. that day. The sale features clothing, furniture, children’s toys, books, videos, games, housewares, kitchen items, knick-knacks, electronics and more. Proceeds benefit Odiyana Buddhist Center’s efforts throughout New England.

Windham Concert Band Performance The Windham Concert Band will perform music for the whole family in a concert at 6:30 p.m., July 6, 2007, at the Guilford Smith Library, 17 Main Street, South Windham. In Concert with Ralph Stanley In Concert with Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys at the East Hartford Cultural Center, 50 Chapman Place, East Hartford, July 6, 2007. Independence Day Celebration The annual Independence Day Celebration in Colebrook will be held at 11 a.m., July 4, 2007, at the Colebrook Meetinghouse followed by a luncheon on the town green. Guest speaker is Eric Foner, Dewitt Clinton professor of history at Columbia University. The event includes a potluck luncheon featuring homemade pies served by the Colebrook Women's Club and the Colebrook Congregational Church Auxiliary.

Independence Day in Litchfield Independence Day, July 4, will be celebrated in Litchfield with a ceremony remembering two American heroes at 8:30 a.m. in East Cemetery, organized by the Daughter of the American Revolution. The ceremony will conclude with a 13-gun salute by the Litchfield Artillery. The day will continue with a pet parade, an ice cream social, old-fashioned games. Hartford/East Hartford Event A multi-venue festival in both Hartford and East Hartford will be held from 4 to 10 p.m., July 7, 2007. Sites are Riverfront Plaza and Charter Oak Landing in Hartford and Founders Plaza and Great River Plaza, both in East Hartford. Family entertainment, children’s activities and the Fiesta del Rio with Latin music is planned. State soldiers who have died in the Afghanistan or Iraq fighting will be read at 7:30 p.m. in all locations. The reading will also include a flyover of four A10s. Fireworks in Stafford A fireworks display sponsored by Stafford Savings Bank will be held at 9:15 p.m., July 7, 2007, at Stafford Motor Speedway. Rain date is July 8.

Lobster Fest in Niantic The Niantic Lions Lobster Fest will be held from noon to 7 p.m., July 7, 2007, at the East Lyme Town Hall grounds on Pennsylvania Avenue. A lobster meal of corn on the cob, chips, ice tea or soda and lobster is $17 in advance, priced to market at the gate; children meal is $8 in advance, $9 at the gate. There will be clam chowder, hot dogs, hamburgers, clam fritters, sausage and peppers, kettlecorn, strawberry shortcake, fried dough, and ice cream as well. Sustainable Living Program The Coventry Farmers’ Market will host a sustainable living program featuring dairy goats and cheesemaking from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 8, 2007, on the grounds of the Connecticut Glass Museum, North River Road and Boston Turnpike, Coventry. There will be a milking demonstration and one on the process of turning cheese into cheese. Pizza Benefit in Canton Memory Ride for Alzheimer's Research will hold a benefit night at Flatbread Company in the Shoppes at Farmington Valley, Route 44, Canton, from 5 to 9 p.m., July 10, 2007. Ovarian Cancer Fundraiser From now until August 18, 2007, the McDonald's restaurant in Canton is participating in a fundraiser for ovarian cancer research called "Teal at the Wheel." The grand event will be held August 18. The restaurant is selling $5 discount tickets for $5 which can redeemed only that day for a Quarter Pounder with Cheese Extra Value Meal with a retail value of $6.04. All proceeds will go directly to Ovations for the Cure. Small Space Gallery Exhibit The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents “Inclusion” at the Small Space Gallery, 70 Audubon Street, second floor, New Haven. Craft Expo 2007 in Guilford Craft Expo 2007, sponsored by the Guilford Art Center, will be held from noon to 9 p.m., July 12 and 13, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., July 14, 2007, on the Guilford Green. The show is celebrating its 50th year and will feature 180 of America’s best craft artists with jewelry, clothing, leather goods, furniture, baskets, pottery, glass and more. Talcott Mountain Music Festival The Talcott Mountain Music Festival will feature “Nothin’ But the Blues,” a concert at 7:30 p.m., July 13, 2007, at Simsbury Meadows featuring the Hartford symphony Orchestra. The event is a tribute to Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Fats Waller featuring the voice of Dee Daniels, Bobby Floyd on keyboard, Dave Mancini on drums and the brass of Byron Stripling and Wycliffe Gordon. Sculptor, Artist Team Up For Kids Camp: Paradise Art Party: Celebrate the successful exhibit by sculptor and painter Karen Rossi and pastel artist Beth Pite in a tropical paradise-themed reception and art show to benefit the Channel 3 Kids Camp: Friday, July 13, 2007, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at ETC (Ellen Traut Collection) Gallery (635 Farmington Ave. in Hartford). This will be the last chance for the public to view and purchase artwork by these two talented women. Benefit Tag Sale The Tabor House – AIDS Project Hartford will hold a tag sale from 4 to 8 p.m., July 13, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., July 14, 2007, at the Convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 27 Park Road, West Hartford. Last year, the sale raised $10,000 for the men and women with HIV/AIDS who would otherwise be homeless.

Mystery Tour in Coventry A Mystery Tour of the Nathan Hale Homestead will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, July 14, 2007, sponsored by the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut. Advance registration is required. The cost for participants over age 8 is $15 per adult, $10 for members. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Annual Grinder Sale The annual grinder sale sponsored by the South Windham Fire Department will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 14, 2007, at the firehouse, 41 Machine Shop Hill Road, South Windham. There will be seating available at the firehouse or grinders may be purchased on a take-out basis. The 12-inch grinders (ham, turkey or salami) are $5.50 for the grinder only or $6.50 for the grinder chips and soda.

Equine Emergency Preparedness The Valley Shore Emergency Management Association in conjunction with the Connecticut Horse Council and High Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center is holding an emergency preparedness and planning day July 14, 2007, open to all Connecticut barn and horse owners and emergency responders. Learn how to prepare for all emergency contingencies, what to do to prepare your barn and how horse owners can interface with their local emergency personnel in times of extreme need. Some of the topics to be covered include evacuation scenarios, temporary relocation scenarios, essential documentation, after storm considerations, basic large animal rescue techniques and sample emergency plans. The morning lecture series will be held at Old Lyme High School with registration at 8:30 a.m. and the program running from 9 to 11:30 a.m. A meet and greet complimentary lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. followed by a hands-on session with firefighters and emergency responders from 1 to 4 p.m. This hands-on session with live horses is for emergency responders only but the horse public and urged to remain and audit the session. MS Benefit Golf Tournament A golf tournament to benefit Multiple Sclerosis will be held July 14, 2007, at Goodwin Golf Course in Hartford. There is an 8 a.m. shotgun start and the $100 per person fee includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, driving range, drinks at the turn, raffle tickets sold for prizes, $20 mulligans, $20 red tees. Drum Corps on the Thames The fifth annual "Drum Corps on the Thames" will be held at 4 p.m., July 14, 2007, at New London High School, 490 Jefferson Avenue, New London. Aqua Scapes Pond Tour The ninth annual Pond Tour, Aqua Scapes, to benefit the American Cancer Society, will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., July 14 and 15, 2007, beginning from Aqua Scapes of CT farm location, 505 William Street, Portland. There participants can pick up maps, directions and descriptions. Some of the exhibits include dancing water, natural stone spires, extreme waterfalls and submarine-sized koi fish. Women of the World Forum Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commere will host its third annual WOW! Women of the World Forum September 28, 2007, at the Warner Theatre, Main Street, Torrington. The forum will run from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The professional development opportunity will feature keynote speaker Jennifer Lauck, award-winning author whose books include "Blackbird," "Still Waters," and "Show Me the Way." A corporate leadership panel will be led by Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz; Laura Grondin, president and CEO of Virginia Industries; Lucille Janatka, president and CEO of Midstate Medical Center; Julie McNamara, president of Albertus Magnus College; and Peyton Patterson, president and CEO of NewAlliance Bank. Artwell Juried Exhibition Artwell Gallery and Community Center is seeking artists working on all mediums to exhibit in Artwell’s 11th annual open juried show. This year’s juror is Cynthia Roznoy, curator of the Mattatuck Museum Arts and History Center in Waterbury. Entries may be dropped off from 5 to 7 p.m., July 15 or 16, 2007, at the gallery, 19 Water Street, Torrington. Over $2,000 in cash and gift awards will be awarded. Croquet Tournament in Stonington Games on the Green, a croquet tournament sponsored by the Borough Clock Fund II Committee, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., July 29, 2007, on Wadawanuck Square in Stonington. The square will be transformed to a Great Gatsby spread complete with a croquet tournament, bocce and other games for fun. There will be children’s games, unique raffle prizes and homemade lemonade and refreshments. The croquet tournament is a play-to-play event for two-person teams, $15 per person and includes refreshments and raffle tickets. Roaring Thunder Motorcycle Ride The third annual Roaring Thunder Motorcycle Ride to benefit Special Olympics will be held, rain or shine, July 29, 2007, from Gengras Harley-Davidson, 221 Governor Street, East Hartford. Registration runs from 9 to 10:15 a.m. and the ride begins at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $25 per rider, $5 per passenger. This is sponsored by the Wethersfield Recreation Department. There will be stops at the Marlborough Tavern and Cross Roads Bar and Grill in Oakdale, The ride ends at Foxwoods Casino and the rider with the best poker hand receives a Foxwoods Casino Weekday Getaway and dinner for two. Growing Mushroom at the Farmers’ Market Growing Mushroom: the Sustainable Living Program at the Coventry Farmers’ Market will feature Jim Peppin from Maggies’ Farm to learn about growing shitake mushrooms. From start to finish, Peppin will take visitors through the process of growing these earthy treats. The market is held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 29, 2007, on the grounds of the CT Glass Museum, North River Road and Boston Turnpike. Admission is free. This week look for early apples, nectarines, plums, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, peaches, raspberries, sweet corn, new potatoes, summer squash, beets, baby lettuce, eggplant, peppers, farmhouse cheeses, rustic breads and more. Dinner and Comedy Show A family night dinner and comedy show will be held July 29, 2007, at the Kingdom life Christian Cathedral, 1455 Naugatuck Avenue, Milford. Music on the River The East Haddam Parks and Recreation Department is holding Music on the River, a concert featuring the Last Fair Deal from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., July 30, 2007, at the Goodspeed Opera House Green in East Haddam. Admission is free but donations are welcome. Bring a picnic or purchase a meal from an area restaurant. No pets please. In case of rain, the concert is moved to Nathan Hale-Ray High School.

4th Annual Golf Tournament The St. Joseph’s Men's Society of St. Agnes Church in Milford, will be holding its fourth Annual Golf Tournament at the Tradition Golf Club, 37 Harrison Road in Wallingford. The tournament will begin at 7 a.m., July 30, 2007. Prizes will be awarded for Best Scores, Longest Drive, and Closest to the Pin. The registration deadline is July 23, 2007. Memorial Golf Outing The second annual Sgt. David Coullard Memorial Golf Outing will be held July 30, 2007, at Simsbury Farms Golf Course in Simsbury. Coullard was a US Marine Corp Sniper killed in action in Iraq. A former resident of Glastonbury, three scholarships have been established at Glastonbury High School for students entering the electronics field. Players and sponsors are still needed.
