Show House at the White House The Farmington Valley Visitors Bureau will host a Show House at the White House through October 21, 2007. The house will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesdays through Fridays; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays; and from noon to 4 p.m., Sundays. Admission is $15 at the door, cash or check. The house is located at 432 Hopmeadow Streert, Simsbury, Route 20. Proceeds from the event will allow FVVA to increase promotion of the Farmington Valley and its businesses to residents, tourists and families wishing to locate. Cutest Pet Contest Tri-Beta Biological Honors Society's Rho Zeta Chapter at St. Joseph College, West Hartford, is sponsoring the Cutest Pet Contest to benefit Fox Memorial Clinic and Tri-Beta. Entries are due by October 15 and voting continues to October 28. Representatives will be in front of the Three Dog Bakery in West Hartford Center (Farmington Avenue) handing out information and entry forms. Entries are $1 each and require completing the form and subnmitting a picture.

Ride/Run Walk in Manchester Sharon's Ride/Run Walk for Epilepsy will be held October 21, 2007, from Charter Oak Park in Manchester to benefi the Epilepsy Foundation of CT. Registration is at noon with the event kicking off at 1 p,.m., rain or shine. Enjoy part of the East Coast Greenway as participants ride 20 miles or walk six miles. Cyclists can experience the fall foliage through Wickham Park, East Hartford and South Windsor, finishing back at Charter Oak Park. Stay for refreshments and prizes. Individual registration is $25, $35 on event day, and for a family of up to four it is $50, $60 on event day. The event is dedicated to Sharon Rosenfeld, a nurse and teacher who cared deeply about epilepsy and advocated helmet safety, and who was killed on a cross-country bike ride in 1993. CTBTA Golf Tournament “Shooting for the Pars 2007,” to benefit the Connecticut Brain Tumor Alliance, will be held October 1, 2007, at the Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield. The charge is $150 for golf and $40 for dinner only. Registration with a box lunch is from 11 a.m. to noon followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Following golf there will be hors d’oeuvres, dinner, prizes, a raffle and auction. Adoption meeting in Avon An International Adoption Informational Meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., October 2, 2007, at the Avon Public Library, 381 Country Club Road, Avon, sponsored by the Children’s Home Society and Family Services. The meeting is designed to help prospective adoptive parents in Connecticut learn about the international adoption process, program options, fees and eligibility requirements. Animal World of Ancient Egypt “The Study of the Animal World of Ancient Egypt,” will be presented by Professor of Fine Arts Dorothy Bosch Keller, at 7 p.m., October 2, 2007, in the Hoffman Auditorium of St. Joseph College, 1678 Asylum Avenue, West Hartford. The slide presentation is base don her recent trip to Egypt. Keller is a renowned art historian, archeologist and photographer and has visited Egypt 29 times where she has worked with members of the Egyptian Council of Antiquities participating in numerous excavations. Annual Navajo Day at TXCC The public is invited to attend “Music Through the Generations,” a free presentation on the culture, traditions and history of the Navajo Indians from 10 to 11:15 a.m., October 2, 2007, at Tunxis Community College, routes 6 and 177, Farmington. It will be held in room 6-127 and refreshments, including authentic Navajo tacos will be served. Four tribe members from the Navajo Reservation, Monument Valley, Utah, will give talks on traditional Navajo music from the past and present with Navajo drum, flute, singing and dance performances. Foster Care Open House Family and Children’s Aid Treatment Foster Care will host an informational open house regarding caring for school-age children in the program through Family and Children’s Aid which offers intensive support services and a boarding rate of $27,000 per year. Teale Lecture on Nature and Environment “Endangered Species Conservation: An Assessment and Prognosis,” by Atty. Michael J. Dodd Research Center, Konover Auditorium on the campus of the University of Connecticut. Survivors of Sexual Violence Women and Families Center Sexual Assault Crisis Service provides short term supportive counseling services to residents of Meriden, Wallingford and Cheshire, Middlesex County and Greater New Haven county. A group for parents and Partners: In Support of LGBTQI Survivors of Sexual Violence will begin Thursday afternoons October 4, 2007, at the New Haven Gay and Lesbian Community Center. Survivors who attend and participate in these groups will have the chance to talk about their experiences with peers and knowledgeable, caring facilitators to assist in their healing. Monotype Exhibit in Avon The Fisher Gallery at the Farmington Valley Arts Center, 25 Arts Center Lane, Avon Park North, presents an exhibit of monotypes by FVAC Studio Artists. “Mysteries of the Monotype” will be on display from October 4 to 31, 2007. Gallery Opening in Hartford “Chuppat Shalom, Shelters of Peace,” an exhibit of chuppots (wedding canopies), designed and created by Michal Ayalon features colored and textured fabrics in handcrafted designs influenced by the Shuks (markets) of the Middle East and sunsets of the Sonora Desert in Arizona. Aircraft Owners Expo in Hartford The Aircraft owners and Pilots Association, AOPA, will hold its annual expo, general aviation’s premier trade show and convention from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., October 4 and 5, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., October 6, 2007, at the CT Convention Center, Hartford. Anne Frank House Come walk through a life-size replica of the Secret Annex of what has become known as the Anne Frank House where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary. It will be at the Charter Oak Cultural Center, 21 Charter Oak Avenue, Hartford. Down to the upholstery on the couch and the pictures on the walls, this model gives an accurate feel for what it was like to live confined in the house. Hammonasset Festival 2007 The 2007 Hammonasset Festival will celebrate Nature and Native American October 6 and 7, 2007, at Hammonasset Beach State Park, 1288 Boston Post Road, Madison, rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be native American music, dance, art, authentic native crafts and history as well as nature activities and museum exhibits. Annual Connecticut LymphomathonThe third annual Connecticut Lymphomathon, a non-competitive 5k walk, will be held at 9 a.m., October 6, 2007, at Rocky Neck State Park, Niantic. Participants include surviviors, family, friends, community and corporate teams walk in homory of those whose lives have been touched by lymphoma. Over a half-million people are currently living with lymphoma in the United States and it is the seocnd fastest rising cancer in the country today and the third most common childhood cancer. Benefit Horse Show The 15th annual Folly Farm Classic Benefit Horse Show to support the Hole n the Wall Gang Camp will be held from 8 a.m. to dark, October 6 and 7, 2007, at the farm, 75 Hartford Road, Route 185, Simsbury. Windsor Chili Challenge A record number of local restaurants, businesses and creative cooks will be on hand to showcase their chili cooking talents October 6, 2007, on the Windsor Town Green from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Samples of hot chili will be available for $1 each beginning at 11 a.m. In addition, cooks will also compete for the best booth design. Cabaret Soiree in Hartford CaBaRet Soiree featuring Zagnut Cirkus Orkestar, Calia Carella and Melange Gitan, will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., October 6, 2007, at the Charter Oak Cultural Center, 21 Charter Oak Avenue, Hartford. Quilt Show in East Haddam The First Church of Christ invites quilters, crafters and anyone interested in beautiful handwork to its 12th annual Quilt and Needle Arts Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., October 6, and from 1 to 5 p.m., October 7, 2007, at the church, 499 Town Street, East Haddam. There will be over 150 antique and newer quilts and examples of needle arts of all kinds displayed in this restored 18th century meeting house. A number of quilt, needle and fiber art supply vendors will be on hand. Visitors will be invited to take a break in the care featuring soups and pies prepared by some of East Haddam’s best cooks. A $5 admission donation is requested. This year’s show features a handmade quilt for raffle.

Apple Festival in Vernon The annual apple festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., October 6, 2007, at the Vernon United Methodist Church, 401 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon. There is no admission charge. Apples pies are still $8 each. There will be craft tables, attic treasures, a country kitchen table for a selection of home-baked goodies, hotdogs and hamburgers, potato salad, beans or coleslaw. Proceeds from the festival will benefit the replacement of the roof on the 200-year-old building.

Columbus Day Celebration The annual Hartford Columbus Day Celebration will be held October 6 and 7, 2007. To begin festivities, a dinner reception and Italian entertainment will be held at 6:30 p.m., October 6, 290907, at the Metzner Center, 680 Franklin Avenue, Hartford. The Columbus Day Committee has dedicated the 2007 celebration in honor of community activist John Tornatore, president of the Ella T. Grasso Lodge, Order of Sons of Italy in America. A Roman Catholic Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m., October 7, at St. Luke Church, Columbus Park on Franklin Avenue. The Sunday morning parade will begin at 10:30 a.m., October 7, at the intersection of Maple and Franklin avenues. From Italy, the group “Musici E Sbandieratori Citta’ Di Floridia” will perform music and a flag exhibition during the parade. The group will also perform at noon, October 5, in front of Hartford City hall.

Oil Drum Artwork Artists from Litchfield County and parts of Connecticut will display Oil Drum Artworks from October 6 to 28, 2007, at the Torrington Artwell Gallery, 19 Water Street, Torrington. An artists’ reception is planned from 6 to 8 p.m., October 6, at the gallery. A light buffet and refreshments will be served. Local artists Dennis Bialek, Richard Griggs, Pam Bogert, Ted Gahl, Sandra Randall and Patrick Randall will show their unique artworks as they transform a common 55-gallon oil drum as part of the Oil Drum Art’s environmental program. Chowda' Fest at Mystic Seaport Mystic Seaports annual Chowderfest will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., October 6, 7 and 8, 2007, at the seaport, 75 Greenmanville Road, Mystic. On the menu are traditional Rhode Island, New England and Manhattan chowders, seafood specialties including lobster salad rol;ls and a raw bar, non-seafood items such as sirloin burgers, seasonal desserts and wine, beer and apple cider. Menu prices range from $1 to $7 and the cost of food is in addition to museum admission. Proceeds benefit the museum and Special Olympics Connecticut. Spectators are FREE! Our charity for this year's event is the Hot Water Rescue Group for Misunderstood Breeds.

2007 Annual Car Show - Time Was Garage hosting show on Sunday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to benefit the New Hartford Fire Department. The car show will be held on Route 44 in New Hartford on the grounds of the old Waring factory. Donations are always appreciated. Food and drinks will be sold. Live music is provided by the group Uncle Fester.

Poetry Central in Hartford Poetry Central: Branching Out – Martin Espada on Pablo Neruda is the title of a program at 4:30 p.m., October 7, 2007, at Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street, Hartford. Poet Martin Espada’s talk is entitled “The Redemption of Pablo Neruda,” and focuses on the evolution of the Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda as a political pet, his struggle and exile at the hands of his own government, his return and death. Walking Weekend at Farmers’ Market A Walking Weekend will be featured at the Coventry Farmers’ Market from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., October 7, 2007. The market, located on North River Road and Boston Turnpike, is free and open to the public. At 12:30 p.m., Chef Ryan ad Lizzie’s Grille will conduct a “Cook Fresh with a Chef,” demonstration of autumn cooking with local, seasonal produce. The market features a Riverside wild edibles identification with naturalist Ed Smith and sample free apples from the growers. The walk begins at noon. At the market, look for ripe tomatoes, heirloom apples and pears, nectarines, plums, blueberries, cantaloupe, peaches, raspberries, sweet corn, potatoes, summer squash, beans, beets, baby lettuce, eggplant, peppers, winter squash, pickles, preserves, maple butter and more. Model Train Show The New Haven and Derby Railroad Club Model Train Show will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., October 7, 2007, at the High Plains Community Center, 525 Orange Center Road, Route 152, Orange. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children ages 6 to 12 with an adult, $7 per family. Those under 6 are free. The show will feature the display and sale of model railroad locomotives and rolling stock and related items, operating layouts for viewing, food service available and door prizes. Mobile Mammography Screening The Hartford Hospital Mobile Mammography Screening Unit will be at the Marilyn Michaelson Senior Center from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., October 8, 2007.
