Midget Racing The Silver City Quarter Midget Club is hosting a National Race at its facility, 835 Hanover Street, Meriden, behind the American Legion. Starting June 20, 2008, families from all over the US and Canada will arrive with their RV's and trailers to participate in the 2008 Eastern Grands. Practice starts at noon, June 23. Qualifying starts June 24, and opening ceremonies will be at 8:45 a.m., June 25 with racing to follow. Free admission for spectators. Full concession stand and leacher seating. Windham Idol So you want to be a star? Head down to the corner of North and Main streets for the i98.3 Windham Idol, part of the 3rd Thursday event in Windham. WILI FM hosts the competition every 3rd Thursday between 6 and 9 p.m. June 19, 2008. Free with free parking. Become part of the cheering section or enter along with contestants from all over the state. There will be plenty of music including Benetu, a local band with Latin rhythms; the Blackburns or Joey Milardo; the Musical Cavaliers; Amy Gallatin and the Stillwaters playing everything from country to folk to bluegrass and western swing. Banner Against Torture Grace Lutheran Church, 46 Woodland Street, Hartford, is joining hundreds of congregations nationwide in displaying banners opposing the use of torture. It will be on display through June 30. More than 275 congregations, including six on Connecticut, will display the large black-and-white banners with messages like "Torture is Wrong," and "Torture is a Moral Issue." Benefit Car Show A benefit Car, Motorcycle and Truck Show will be held at noon, June 1, 2008, at Price Chopper in Windsor with all proceeds to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand for childhood cancer research. It is sponsored by CT Street Legends Car Club. Information, www.connecticutstreetlegends.com.

Car Show The 30th annual Antique and Custom Road Show will be held beginning at 9 a.m., June 1, 2008, at Hollow Park in Woodbury sponsored by the Woodbury Lions Club. Refreshments available.

Arts & Crafts Fair The 20th annual Spring Arts & Crafts Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 1, 2008, on the Westbrook Town Green routes 1 and 153, Westbrook. Free admission. Select artisans from throughout the northeast will feature painting, jewelry, clothing, dolls and doll clothes, floral arrangements, needlework, pottery, stained glass, woodcraft and more. Car Show The Johnny B. Goode and Prudential CT Realty Car Show for the Sunshine Kids will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., June 1, 2008, at 192 Main Street, Route 10 in Southington. Spectators are free and show car entry is $5. Trophies for antique, classic, muscle, custom cars, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes, music and a hula-hoop contest. Rain date is June 8.

Essex Fire Anniversary The Essex Fire Engine Co. No. 1 will celebrate its 175th anniversary June 1, 2008, by participating in the second annual Old Saybrook Firefighters Competition and Family Fun Day June 1, 2008, behind the Essex Fire Headquarters. The daylong event, which is free and open to the public, is designed to test firefighters' skill levels through drilling, training and competition. The competition begins at 9:30 a.m. with a color guard competition. The event will feature grandstand seating or attendees may bring their own seats. Anniversary Celebration The Connecticut Humanities Council will celebrate its 35th anniversary June 1, 2008, at Wesleyan University, 45 Wyllys Avenue, Middletown. The cocktail reception begins at 4 p.m., honoring CHC Executive Director Bruce Fraser for 30 years of service. Art Exhibit Capital Community College Conrad L. Mallett Art Gallery will host an exhibit opening from 5 to 8 p.m., June 1, 2008, of an African anthropology in service of art by Benjamin Betsem Atiback. The exhibit runs through July 20, at the gallery, 950 Main Street, first floor, Hartford. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays.

Pet Expo The Torrington Park and Recreation Department and the Barks and Rec (Torrington dog park advocates) are holding a Pet Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 1, 2008, at the armory at 153 South Main Street, Torrington. Animals will be on site through vendors and there will be rescue groups available, Fidelco dog demonstrations and more.

Fairfield Cty. Idol Show Harmony on the Sound Chorus will present the Fairfield County Idol Show June 1, 2008, at Saugatuck School in Westport. The program will begin at 2 p.m. preceded by a silent auction at 1 p.m. Admission is $18 for adults, $12 for students and senior citizens. The Harmony on the Sound Chorus, the Sweet Adelines International's 2007 Region 1 Chorus Champion, will present its second annual Fairfield County Idol Contest. Five of the county's most talented high school students will appear in the spotlight competing for cash prizes. The winner will receive $1,000. Touch-a-Truck The North Branford Recreation Department will host the 8th annual Touch-a-Truck from 1 to 4 p.m., June 1, 2008, in the North Branford Auditorium parking lot. See, climb on, in and out of fire and rescue trucks, charter and school buses, bulldozers, cement and dump trucks, an ice cream truck, race car, back hoe and more. Over 40 vehicles will be present. Farmers' Market Opening The Coventry Farmers' Market will open for the season from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 1, 2008, on the grounds of the Nathan Hale Homestead, 2299 South Street, Coventry. On opening day, there will be antique farm tractors, baby farm animals and the planting of the "three sisters," corn, pumpkin and beans. Fiber artisans will demonstrate sheep shearing, needle felting and natural dying. A birthday cake will be cut at noon. At 12:30 p.m., there will be a program on starting an organic garden. Church Bazaar The Holy Trinity Church Bazaar will be held from June 2 through 7, 2008, at the church, 84 North Colony Street, Route 5, Wallingford. Hours are 6 to 10 p.m., June 2 through 5; 6 to 11 p.m., June 6; 2 to 5 p.m. matinee, and 5 to 10 p.m., June 7 with ride-all-the rides wristband available for $20 Monday through Wednesday and $15 on Saturday. There will be food and games, rides, arts and crafts all week with a big raffle on Saturday night. New this year is a beer garden, two new rides and a 50/50 raffle twice nightly. Show Biz Primer The Hamden Arts Commission will sponsor the "Show Biz Primer" with actor Jerry Prell from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., June 3, 2008, at Thornton Wilder Hall, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden. This seminar is for anyone who has thought about pursuing a career in the entertainment industry and wants to learn the business of becoming an actor. Areas covered will include training, marketing, getting an agent, protecting against rip-offs, building career diversity, the acting unions, the value of a business plan and more. Prell is an actor, director and teacher and for eight years he was Dr. Hank Steele on "The Young and the Restless." Felician Fundraiser A fundraiser to benefit the Felician Adult Day Care Center will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., June 3, 2008, at the Wendy's on Elm Street in Enfield. A percentage of the receipts from the evening will benefit the center.

Business Appreciation The Business Advisory Council of MARC Community Resources is honoring those employers and school systems who have contributed to the inclusion of people with disabilities within their systems. Strawberry Supper The annual Strawberry Supper will be served at 5 and 6:30 p.m., June 4, 2008, at Grace Episcopal Church, 311 Broad Street, on the town Green, Windsor. Job Fair A West End Community Job Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 4, 2008, at the United Methodist Church, 571 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. It is free. AIDS Benefit Nontombi Naomi Tutu, writer, teacher and passionate advocate for peace and human rights, will be the featured speaker at WE CAN (Women Can End the Course of AIDS Now) a dinner to benefit the Connecticut AIDS Resource Coalition, from 5 to 8 p.m., June 5, 2008, at the Town and Country Club in Hartford. Gay/Lesbian Film Festival The Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is celebrating its 21st year of featuring documentaries, shorts and full-length films that showcase the richness and creativity of the gay and lesbian culture. The festival takes place at Cinestudio on the campus of Trinity College, 300 Summitt Street, Hartford, from May 30 through June 7. Films are shown nightly at 7:30 p.m. with matinees at 4 p.m., May 30, 31, June 6 and 7. A cafe cinema is offered Friday and Saturday evenings featuring gourmet salads and sandwiches and soft drinks. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and senior citizens. Festival/Tag Sale St. Lucian's Festival and Tag Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 7, 2008, at St. Lucian's Residence, 532 Burritt Street, New Britain. Admission is free. The tag sale will feature over 60 tables and Polish food, music and entertainment and a vintage car display featuring a 1956 Ford Thunderbird. Skate Jam The second annual Memorial Skate Jam will be held at the Mill Woods Skate Park in Wethersfield beginning at noon, June 7, 2008. The jam is in memory of Alexander Lubarsky who died May 23, 2007, while at the park. Local youth have organized this event to raise funds to light the park for evening use.

Lemonade Stand Alex's Lemonade Stand will be open at 10 a.m., June 7, 2008, at the Stop & Shop in South Windsor, with all proceeds to benefit childhood cancer research.

Dog Walk and Fair The third annual Walk for Chance Dog Walk & Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 7, 2008, at Northwest Park in Windsor. The event is sponsored by the First Town 4-H Club and Our Companions. The dog walk takes individuals and teams along a 1/2-mile course at the park and pledged donations should be collected in advance. There will be a Dog Pound Lock-Up with your dog. Dogs and owners will be locked up until they collect enough pledged donations to pay the fine. There will also be a goods and services auction and raffle, a K-9 costume contest, dog tricks and talent contest, a prison dog demonstration by state police, dancing dogs, vendors, a scavenger hunt, hames and more. Dog Days in Rocky Hill Rocky Hill Dog Days in the Park and Labs4Life Doggies Walk-a-Thon will be held from noon to 4 p.m., June 7, 2008, at the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater in Elm Ridge Park, Rocky Hill. Fishing Derby The 12th annual Domenic Guerrera Family Fishing Derby will be held from 8 to 11 a.m., June 7, 2008, at Upper Fulton Park Pond, Waterbury. Prizes will be awarded to children under 16. Derby participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment if they have it although limited equipment will be available for loan. Hazardous Waste A Windsor Household Hazardous Waste Event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 7, 2008, at the Poquonock Water Pollution Control Facility, 1222 Poquonock Avenue, Windsor. There is no charge. Sponsored by The Metropolitan District, residents from Windsor and other eligible towns can to empty their homes of hazardous waste. Acceptable household waste include CFLs, solvents, pesticides, cleaners, mercury containing products gasoline, oil-based paint and batteries. The following materials will not be accepted: latex paint, tires, medical waste, radioactive waste, household garbage, compressed gas cylinders, smoke detectors, ammunition and explosives. Art Exhibit The Arts & Crafts Association/Gallery 53 will host an exhibition for artist Joseph Kuczyneski June 7 to 27, 2008, at the gallery, 53 Colony Street, Meriden. Kuczyneski has exhibited his work at the Wadsworth Athenaeum and galleries around the state. On display in the Main Gallery will be his "Orchard Series," that took him eight years to complete. These paintings tell the story of everyday lives of people who make their living tending the trees and fields in appple orchards around the state. Arts on the Edge Celebrate the 13th annual Aububon Arts on the Edge from noon to 7 p.m., June 7, 2008, on Audubon Street, downtown New Haven. This free arts and entertainment event takes place rain or shine with music, dancing and hands-on activities for the entire family. There will be the Traveling Art Van, face painting, Have Bones Will Travel from the Yale School of Nursing, and language lessons, straw geometry hat building, create and play drums, a steel drum band, Punch and Judy Puppet Show, chalk art and more. Cello Concert Cellist Jami Siebert will perform at the Albert Schweitzer Institute at Quinnipiac University, 275 Mt. Carmel Avenue, Hamden, at 7:30 p.m., June 7, 2008. A reception will precede the event at 6:30 p.m. Sieber is an internationally recognized electric and acoustic cellist, vocalist and composer who inspires others to protect the shared life on this planet. Teen Tournament The Daniel J. Griffin Memorial Teen Golf Tournament will be played June 7, 2008, at Willowbrook Golf Course, South Windsor. Registration is from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Donation is a minimum of $60. Daniel Griffin died April 2, 2002, after a six-month battle with leukemia. He was a student at Cheney Tech and a member of Troop 62 working towards his Eagle badge. Tennis Tournament The Truth Project's Juneteenth Tennis Tournament will be played from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., June 7 and 8, 2008 in Hartford and Bloomfield. The tournament's primary purpose is to build community awareness in tennis around the Juneteenth Celebration and to fund the Truth project's education initiatives. House and Garden Tour A house and garden tour of the Phelps-Hatheway House will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 7, 2008, at the house in Suffield.
