One Book for Greater Hartford One Book for Greater Hartford - Student Connections will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., September 5, 2009, at the Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street, Hartford. This is the eighth year to gather the community around a work of contemporary fiction. This year's election is "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," by Junot Diaz. The book explores the duality of the immigrant experience. Students from Miss Porter's School, Capital Prep and Covenant Prep will meet to discuss the the book. Zoo Tots Zoo Tots at Beardsley Zoo is a 45-minute program for children ages 18 months to three years accompanied by an adult. The program may include stories, activities, crafts and live animals. Reading Event Charles Grodin and David Canary are among featured guest readers at the FSW-sponsored International Literacy Day Read-a-Thon from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., September 8, 2009, at the Trumbull Mall. Area celebrities, dignitaries and volunteers will take turns reading in eight to 10-minute segments throughout the day. The event is being held to raise public awareness of the continuing problem of illiteracy in the Greater Fairfield County area and to demonstrate how the FSW's programs are helping address the issue.

Good Neighbor Day Residents of Fairfield County will have the unique opportunity to meet each other and develop new friendships when Fruits & Flowers at Caterina’s hosts the annual FTD Good Neighbor Day September 9. Beginning at 8 a.m., Fruits & Flowers at 566 Lindley Street, corner of Capital Avenue., will give away 8,000 flowers in bunches of a dozen free to anyone who visits the shop, while supplies last. The catch? Anyone who picks up a dozen, will be asked to keep one of the flowers for themselves and give the others away to 11 different people spreading goodwill and friendship in the community. Hazardous Waste Collection The Wethersfield Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., October 10, 2009, at the Wethersfield High School, 411 Wolcott Hill Road. Free. Sponsored by the Metropolitan District, the program will accept household hazardous waste include CFLs, solvents, pesticides, cleaners, mercury-containing products, gasoline, oil-based paint and batteries. The following items will not be accepted, latex paint, tires, medical waste, radioactive waste, household garbage, smoke detectors, ammunitions and explosives. Collect items in disposable but sturdy boxes or bins, store in a cool, dry place away from children and pets and transport to the site in your trunk. Wapping Fair The 117th Wapping Fair will be held from September 10 to 13, 2009, at 100 Cedar Avenue, Evergreen Walk in South Windsor. Admission is $6 for adults and children over 57 inches, senior citizens are $3 and children under 57 inches are free. Benefit Hockey Game The Paul Dube Memorial Event will be held from 6;30 to 8:30 p.m., September 11, 2009, at the International Skating Center of Connecticut, 37 Madison Lane, Simsbury. Paul Dube died at age 33 while running a local road race, leaving behind a wife and three children. Proceeds from this event will benefit a scholarship fund. Wheel-a-Thon Fundraiser The Center for Disability Rights 2009 Wheel-a-Thon is a fundraising and community awareness campaign to benefit the youth programs and activities for the Center for Disability Rights in West Haven and its partners. 50 Million Pound Challenge The 50 Million Pound Challenge is a collaborative effort between Dr. Ian Smith and State Farm to urge people to lose a total of 50 million pounds to combat obesity.
