Hamlet Up Close Hamlet Up Close Lectures, a short course in Hamlet, will be taught by Henry Tonkin, president emeritus of the University of Hartford through the President's College. It is a play we all know but how well do we know it? There are no right answers and plenty of room for discussion. Beethoven's Symphonies Beethoven's Symphonies: The Artist as Hero Lectures, will be offered by Michael Lankester, former music director of the Hartford Symphony, will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m., September 15, 22, October 6 and 13, 2008, in Wilde Auditorium of the University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. The cost is $100. The nine symphonies of Beethoven will be discussed by Lankester, renowned for his conversations about music. The HSO is performing all nine of Beethoven's symphonies this season. Singers Needed The New Britain Chorale, a no-audition community chorus representing all of central Connecticut, is seeking singers in all voice ranges for its fall concert November 9. Apple Fundraiser Every Saturday in September, apple pickers can receive $2 off a pick-your-own bag of apples by bringing in non-perishable food items to donate to the CT Food Bank. The Blue Jay Orchards will also donate $2 worth of fresh apples to the food bank for every bag purchased with a non-perishable food item donated. Stray Dogs of Nicaragua Peta Kaplan-Sandrez will exhibit paintings at the Lutz Children's Museum, Manchester, from September 1 through October 31, 2008, Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and from noon to 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment. She creates large scale paintings of stray dogs she enountered on the streets in Nicaragua. Her paintings capture the special character of each dog and the spirit that allows it to carry on its daily struggle for survival. Free with museum admission. Information, www.lutzmuseum.org.

Food Drive Country Curtains of Avon and Gifts of Love have teamed up for a food drive. Non-perishable food items may be dropped off at Country Curtains, Route 44, Avon now through October 31, 2008. Jewish Festival The 11th annual New England Jewish Festival, a celebration of Jewish life, will be held Labor Day Weekend, September 1. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. at White Memorial Conservation Center, 80 Whitehall Road, off Route 202, Litchfield. A mix of people from various backgrounds will gather to enjoy and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Jewish Life for a day of Jewish music, art, Judaica and crafts. Document Exhibition The Windsor 375th Anniversary Historic Document Exhibition will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., September 4, 2008, at Windsor Town Hall. Admission is free. The Windsor town clerks are responsible for land records dating from 1640 and vital statistics from 1639 to current day as well as various other town records such as grand lists, tax lists, patriot lists, animal marking and ordinances. See the records and honor the clerks from Windsor's daughter towns at the reception. The documents will remain on display from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays, through September26.

MOPS Meeting Mothers of Preschoolers, MOPS, will meet from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m., September 4, 2008, at First Church of Christ, 150 Main Street, Wethersfield, for Adventures in Mothering Game Day, featuring "Mommy Feuyd," other exciting games, prizes, fellowship and food. Nathan Lewis Exhibit A reception will mark the opening of "Where Heaven Made Fun," an exhibition featuring Nathan Lewis' epic painting "Till We Find the Blessed Isles Where Our Friends Are Dwelling." The painting is a remix of Leutze's "Washington Crossing the Delaware." Wapping Fair The 116th Annual Wapping Fair will be held from September 4 to 7, 2008, at Evergreen Walk behind LA Fitness in South Windsor. Arts and Craft Show Glastonbury's On the Green Fine Art and Craft Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., September 6 and 7, 2008, on Hubbard Green in Glastonbury. The show features over 200 exhibitors from throughout the east featuring original paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media, photography and graphics. Apple Festival The annual Apple Festival, sponsored by St. Peter's Episcopal Church, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., September 6 and 7, 2008, on the Monroe Green. Admission to the event is free. It features an art exhibit, 70 crafters, more than 600 homemade pies, tarts, cookies, cupcakes and other baked goods, children's games and prizes, two moon bounces, face painting and caramel apples, fresh apples and apple cider for sale at Apple Central. There will be more than 300 mums and asters for sale and food will be available at the snack bar. Apple crisp and ice cream will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A raffle will be held Sunday. Antique Appraisal Day Antique Appraisal Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., September 6, 2008, at First Congregational Church of Cromwell, 355 Main Street. Cost for appraisals is one item for $10 or three items for $25. Skinner Antiques will be on hand conducting verbal appraisals. Skinner is a full-service auctioneer and appraiser of antiques with galleries in Boston and Bolton, Mass. No coins, jewelry, stamps and musical instruments. There will also be a teacup raffle table. Jazz Festival The Many Colors of a W*O*M*A*N, free jazz concert, will be held at 8 p.m., September 6, 2008, at the Aetna Theater at the Wadsworth Atheneum of Art, 600 Main Street, Hartford. Art Exhibit The Arts and Crafts Association and Gallery 53 will host an exhibition for artists Bruce Raven and Chris Ivers September 6 to 24, 2008, at Gallery 53, 53 Colony Street, Meriden. Music Fest The second annual Mitchell Farm Music Fest is planned for September 6, 2008, at Mitchell Farm in Salem. Rain date is September 7. Admission is $20 per person with those under 12 free. Award-winning recording artists Aztec Two-Step plus Mike Greca will perform, all to benefit Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement, a non-profit farm for aged and/or infirm horses. Touch a Truck Touch a Truck and Family Fun Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., September 6, 2008, at Pierson Park, Cromwell. Rain date is September 14. Admission is $5 per person and includes food provided by the Cromwell 99 restaurant with an additional fee for the Kid Zone. There will be fire trucks, an ambulance, police car, dump truck, and more. Conference on Disparities The first Tzedaka Community Development Corporation Conference on Disparities will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., September 6, 2008, at Connecticut College, New London, with a focus on disparities in the areas of judicial, education, health and mental health. Dog Day Festival K9 Kerplunk and the Manchester Dog Day Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., September 6, 2008, at Globe Hollow Pool in Manchester. Rain date is September 7. Sponsored by the Manchester Dog owners Group and the Manchester Recreation Department, the event is free and will feature activities, contests and demonstrations. Licensed dogs can swim off leash in the pool while owners can enjoy hot dogs. Dogs can sign the Manchester dog park "petition", go Dunkin' for Dogs, and run for the title of Recall Race Champion while owners can bid on items from local businesses and visit vendors and exhibitors. Taste of Italy A Taste of Italy, sponsored by the Italian Heritage and Cultural Committee of Norwich, will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., September 6, 2008, at the Howard T. Brown Memorial Park in Norwich, across the river from the Norwich Marina. There will be restaurant vendors from 17 area restaurants serving the best in Italian specialities such as sausage and pepper grinders, fried dough, pasta e fagoli, rigatoni vodka, lasagna, shrimp alla romano, meatball grinders, pizza, fried calamari, baked manicotti, peppers and veal, stuffed peppers, Caesar salad, garlic knots, canoli, pizzelles, tiramisu, Italian ice and more. Benefit Golf Outing The second Annual Citizens for Quality Sickle Cell Care Golf Outing will be held September 6, 2008, at Goodwin Park Golf Course in Hartford. Shotgun start at 8 a.m. The event includes cart, lunch, on-course refreshments, prizes, and a raffle. The cost is $100 per golfer. Colonial Supper A Colonial Ham and Bean Supper along with the music of the Gaslight Gang will be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m., September 6, 2008, at the Oliver Ellsworth Homestead, Matthies Hall, 778 Palisado Avenue, Windsor. Wheels & Wings Beautiful vintage cars and planes will be on display at the second annual Wheels & Wings from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., September 7, 2008, at Candlelight Farms Airfield in New Milford, 5 Green Pond Road. Bikers for Babies The March of Dimes Bikers for Babies supports the mission to give every baby a healthy start. Travel Talk The Soroptimists of Farmington Valley will host a program on volunteer travel from 6:30 to 8 p.m., September 8, 2008, at the Avon Town Hall Program Room, Avon. Speaker is world traveler Helena Stein who will talk about her recent trips to India and Nepal. In her travels, she visited schools for street children. Stein is an art teacher at Montessori Magnet School, an artist and photographer. The program is free and the public is welcome.

Gallery 195 The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents works by Jennifer Davies and Lisa Keskinen at Gallery 195 located at NewAlliance Bank, 195 Church Street, 4th floor, New Haven. The exhibit runs through September 26, 2008, with an artists' reception from 5 to 7 p.m., September 9, 2008. The public is invited. Davies has taught classes in handmade paper. I Can Cope Cancer patients and their families are invited to a special program designed to meet the needs of cancer patients, their families and friends entitled "I Can Cope." It will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m., September 9, 2008, in conference rooms A and B at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center, 536 Saybrook Road, Middletown. The program will feature information about cancer, its treatment and assistance in coping with some of the physical and emotional issues of living with cancer. Ovarian Cancer Prevention Ovarian Cancer: Prevention and Early Detection will be held at the Yale Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital at 6 p.m., September 10, 2008. It is free. Food Drive A Food Drive to benefit the Avon Food Pantry and sponsored by the Avon Volunteer Fire Department will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., September 11, 2008, at the Big Y, West Main Street in Avon. It is being held in memory of those first responders who answered the call in New York City on 9/11. Non-perishable food items will be collected and donated to the food pantry. Hero's Tribute A Hero's Tribute, a musical show featuring performances by the Silk City Barbershop Singers, the Dave Loudon Band, Manchester School of Dance and special guest and American Idol finalist Julia DeMato, will be held at 7 p.m., September 11, 2008, at Cheney Hall, Manchester. Symphony Auditions Greater Waterbury Youth Symphony Auditions will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., September 11, and 9 to 11:30 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m., September 13, 2008, at Kennedy High School in Waterbury. Tuition is $250 per year and the program is open to musicians ages 6 through high school who have had at least six months of instruction with their instrument - strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion, a basic understanding of music theory and note reading. Fridays at the Mortensen Fridays at the Mortensen event of the new season will be William Hosley's talk on "Reading Places: Art, Architecture and History in Early Connecticut," from 5:45 to 8 p.m., September 12, 2008, in Mortensen Library on the campus of the University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Charity Golf Event Laptops for the Wounded is a non-profit organization that provides laptops with webcams to wounded military personnel in hospitals so they can be in contact with wives, husbands and families while recuperating. The golf event will help fund the program. It will be held September 12, 2008, at Hawks Landing Golf Course in Southington and the entry fee is $125. The fee includes 18 holes of golf with cart, beer and beverages during the game and with dinner, a buffet dinner, cash payoff for the first three places. Scramble format, rain or shine. Health/Safety Day Family Health and Safety Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., September 13, 2008, at the Berlin Farmers' Market, Stop & Shop Plaza, Massirio Drive, Berlin. The event will feature area businesses with ideas for a healthy and safe lifestyle, the Kensington Rotary Club Amber Alert Photo ID Session, the Berlin Police Department on hand for car seat safety check, the New Britain Rock Cats Rocky and McGruff the Crime Dog. House and Garden Tour The Phelps-Hatheway House and Garden Tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., September 29, 2008, in Suffield. It is sponsored by the Museum of Natural History and Connecticut Landmarks. The house was built in 1761 by a weathly businessman, a Tory sympathizer who suffered a reversal of fortunes during the American Revolution. The house was bought and renovated by Oliver Phelps in 1788. The Hatheway family owned the house during the 19th century accumulating an attic full of artifacts that document life during the century. Following a guided tour of the house, visitors can tour Suffield's 18th and 19th century Main Street Historic District. Bring a picnic lunch. For adults and children ages 8 and older. Benefit Golf Tournament Toys for Tot's Golf Tournament will be played September 29, 2008, at Pequabuck Golf Club, 56 School Street, Pequabuck. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The Bob Corbin Memorial Golf Tournament is named in honor of the late Bob Corbin who died earlier this year at age 50. He was a long time member of the golf club and was active in fundraising events for the Toys for Tot's Program and local Marine activities. Proceeds will be donated to the local Toys for Tots Program run by Charlie Company 1st Battalion 25th Marine Regiment Reserve Unit of Plainville. The event is a four-man scramble and the entry fee of $100 includes greens fees, golf cart, practice range, awards banquet and raffle. Event speaker is Dick McAuliffe, three-time Major League Baseball All-Star and 1998 World Series Champion with the Detroit Tigers and later with the Boston Red Sox. Golf Marathon The Barnum Museum Foundation's first Golf Marathon Fundraiser will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., September 29, 2008, at the Racebrook Country Club in Orange. The first 40 golfers who can raise $500 each for the museum will be selected to play all 27 holes at the country club. Simply enjoy the course and play for fun or organize matches with friends. Small contests will be held and prizes will be distributed throughout the day. Navajo Day Navajo Indians will share history and culture at the sixth annual Navajo Day at Tunxis Community College, routes 6 and 177, Farmington, from 10 to 11:15 a.m., September 30, 2008. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Three tribe members from the Navajo Reservations, Monument Valley, Utah, will give talks on Navajo lifestyle, religious beliefs, performances with flute and drum, a powwow dance and singing of tradtiional and contemporary Navajo songs. Quinnipiac Tribe Lecture Gordon Fox-Running Brainerd of the Quinnipiac Tribal Council will discuss how the Quinnipiac tribe lost land in Greater New Haven at 7 p.m., September 30, 2008, in Alumni Hall at Quinnipiac University, 275 Mt. Carmel Avenue, Hamden. The free event is open to the public. Brainerd, a medicine man who performs religious ceremonies for the tribe, will explain how Puritans gave the Quinnipiac tribe 1,200 acres of land which was then slowly taken away over the years. Radio Nostalgia "Radio Nostalgia with Bob Schultz" will be presented by the Friends of the Avon Free Public Library and the Avon Senior Center, at 1 p.m., September 30, 2008, at the Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road, Avon.
