MDA Benefit The National Association of Letter Carriers (NACL) Branch 147 is holding its third annual Letter Writing Campaign throughout Norwalk to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association through August 31. Members will drop off letters to all local residents and companies to ask for support the MDA’s annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. At the telethon, members of the NALC Branch 147 will present a check to the MDA with the amount of funds raised through the letter writing campaign. Blanket Norwich with Love Every Saturday in August from noon to 4 p.m., the Leffingwell House Museum will collect new and gently used blankets and comforters for distribution to local shelters, Red Cross and Salvation Army this fall and winter. Italian Festival Bus Trip The Lega Siciliana Social Club will sponsor a bus trip to the San Gennaro Feast in New York City, the city’s longest running and largest outdoor festival in the United States. Basketball Tournament The Detective James W. Matthews Sr. National law Enforcement and Fire Fighters Basketball Tournament will be played from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.., September 19 and 20, 2009 at Hartford Public High School in Hartford. Law enforcement and fire fighters from across the country will come to Connecticut to play against Connecticut officers to help raise money for the scholarship fund. Open to the public. Plymouth/Whale Watch Exploring Historic Plymouth and the Whales of the Stellwagen Bank – a trip – will be held August 15, 2009, from the University of CT, sponsored by the CT State Museum of Natural History. The cost is $75 per adult and $65 per child. The bus leaves at 8 a.m. to arrive in Plymouth at 10:30 a.m. with time to explore. Golf Tournament Blue Fox Run in Avon is the site of the David Winton Foundation Golf Tournament to be played August 7, 2009. The event is in honor of Winton, a graduate of Wethersfield High School who died in the September 11 tragedy at the World Trade Center. A scholarship in his name has been established at Wethersfield High to be given to a graduating senior representing his characteristics, interests and values. Tour of the Litchfield Hills The Tour of the Litchfield Hills Cycling Tour will celebrate its sixth anniversary by returning to Torrington’s Coe Park August 2, 2009 to benefit The Center for Cancer Care Fund. Last year the event raised a record $100,000 for the locally-based fund which supplies support for cancer patients residing or receiving treatment in Northwest Connecticut. The fee is $45 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Registration begins at 6 a.m. and the charity ride consists of 12, 30, 50, 75 and 100-mile routes. Firemen’s Carnival The Winsted Fire Department will hold its annual Carnival beginning August 12 at the Rowley Street Grounds. Every night is wrist band night with one price for unlimited rides.
