Food Drive Country Curtains of Avon and Gifts of Love have teamed up for a food drive. Non-perishable food items may be dropped off at Country Curtains, Route 44, Avon now through October 31, 2008. Ballet Open Houses The public is invited to visit the New Haven Ballet at four open houses in August. Open houses at 70 Audubon Street, New Haven, will be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m., August 13 and from 9:30 a.m. to noon, August 16. Artistic director Noble Barker and faculty and staff will be available. There will be free mini-classes, refreshments, balloons, performance videos and registration materials. Open houses at Guilford studios, 200 Village Walk, Route 1, will be from 4 to 6 p.m., August 19 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., August 23. Food Drive The 13th annual Food Drive sponsored by the Department of Public Safety, will be held at four Shaw's Supermarket sites August 15, 16 and 17, 2008. Dates are from 4 to 7 p.m., August 15, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., August 16 and 17. Tunxis Gallery The public is invited to view "Photographs" by Donna Masotti in the new Wallace Barnes and Barbara Hackman Franklin Art Gallery at Tunxis Community College, routes 6 and 177, Farmington, through August 14, 2008. It is the first in a series of exhibitions by Tunxis visual fine arts alumni. Approximatley 44 digital photographs printed on fine digital papers, some with encaustic technique on hardboard are on display. Masotti graduated from Tunxis with a degree in photography in 2005. Casino Bus Trip The Oakville Watertown Youth Football and Cheer will sponsor a bus trip to the Mohegan Sun Casino August 23, 2008 departing at 1:45 p.m. from the Mosgrove Parking Lot and returning at 10:30 p.m. The cost is $30 per person and includes transportation, free buffet dinner or $10 food voucher, $20 gambling voucher. The morning feature talks include a discussion of Lifelong Learning, an academic talk on archaeology in the Naugatuck River Valley with the afternoon program includes an art program, a historical tour of the Palace Theater or a chance to view the documentary "Been Rich All My Life." Government Academy The Manchester Government Academy, sponsored by the town of Manchester, will celebrate its 13th session with fall classes beginning on September 11, 2008. The academy concludes November 20, 2008, with a graduation ceremony. The sessions are free and held on Thursday nights and are open to anyone living or working in Manchester. Seating is limited and applications received on a first-come basis are given preference. Others are placed on a waiting list for the Spring 2009 session or for a cancellation. Participants will receive an inside look at the municipal operations from public safety to the public library. There will be a blend of demonstrations, presentations and tours. 'Menopause-The Musical' St. Mary Women's Club of Newington is sponsoring a bus to a performance of "Menopause-The Musical," November 9, 2008, to City Stage in Springfield, Mass. The bus leaves St. Mary School parking lot in Newington at 11 a.m. with the show to start at 3 p.m. There will be free time for lunch on your own or shopping at the Holyoke Mall and Christmas Tree Shop. UNH Camps Intellectually summertime pursuits offered by the University College at the University of New Haven include a variety of programs for Connecticut youths, traditional college students and adult learners. In August the following are offered: CSI Camp, August 3 to 7, The Engineering and Science Summer Institute, open to young women entering grades 6 thought 9. The residential summer program offers exciting, hands-on activities that will correleate with science and math coursework that attendees are learning in their traditional classrooms. The Physical World Investigation Camp runs from August 11 to 15, 2008, and is open to students in grades 7 to 10 and will focus on practical, yet fun experiences through real world physics projects including creating wind towers and invisible sunscreen. Camp Rising Sun The American Cancer Society's Camp Rising Sun, a camp for children ages 6 to 17 affected by cancer, will operate at Camp Jewell YMCA in Colebrook, the week of August 17. This is a free, weeklong camp experience that helps children diagnosed with cancer meet other kids, build self-esteem and confidence and allow them to participate in activities like swimming, photography, magic tricks, board games, hiking, horseback riding and boating. Medical staff is available on site, 24-hours-a-day. Camper to staff ratio is 2:1. Information, www.camprisingsun.com.

Dental Clinic Reasonably priced dental services are available to the public through the dental hygiene clinic of Tunxis Community College housed at the University of Connecticut Health Center, 263 Farmington Aveue, Farmington. Each patient is examined by a licensed dentist. In addition, Tunxis dental hygiene students offer an array of services under the supervision of Tunxis faculty and the attending dentist including dental cleanings, X-Rays, sealants, flouride and oral cancer screenings for adults and children. The cost of the exam, dental cleaning and flouride treatment is $40. The clinic also accepts Medicaid, Title 19 and HUSKY Plans A & B. Lakeridge Gallery Recent works by photographer and award-winning graphic artist Priscilla Newcomb of Winsted will be exhibited at the new art gallery at Lakeridge, a private community in Torrington, Newcomb's landscape photographs and digital collages will be on display through August 15. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., August 1 in the gallery in East Lodge. It is free and open to the public and Newcomb will be present to discuss her work. Her work will be available for purchase. The gallery is open weekdays fron noon to 4 p.m. and she will be in residenc from 1 to 6 p.m., weekends working on design projects and refining images for her 2008/09 solo exhibits at Litchfield County galleries. 'Les Miserables' "Les Miserables," school edition, will be performed at 7:30 p.m., August 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 2008, and at 2 p.m., August 3, 2008, at the LP Wilson Community Center, 599 Matianuck Avenue, Windsor. Potato and Corn Festival The North Branford Potato and Corn Festival will be held from 4 to 10 p.m., August 1; noon to 10 p.m., August 2; and noon to 7 p.m., August 3, 2008, at Auger Farm, Forest Road, Route 22, next to Totoket Valley Park. Benefit Supper A Spaghetti and Meatball Supper to benefit the Scholarship Foundation of Morris will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., August 1, 2008, at the Morris Town Hall, routes 109 and 61, Morris. Adults are $8, seniors age 60 and older are $6 as well as children 12 and under. The menu includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, beverages and desserts. 'Beauty & the Beast" "Beauty & the Beast" will be performed at 7 p.m., August 1 and 2, 2008, at Manchester High School's Bailey Auditorium. Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for students, children and senior citizens. The program will be presented by C.A.S.T Children Theatre and cast numbers more than 100 ranging in ages from 4 to 18. Fair/Barbecue The 49th Annual Country Fair at the Congregational Church in Killingworth will be held August 1 and 2, 2008, on the church grounds, 273 Route 81, just north of the traffic circle and Route 80. A traditional chicken barbecue dinner will be served from 5 to 8 p.m., August 1. The menu features barbecued chicken, side dishes, pie, soft drinks and coffee. There will be musical entertainment and an opportunity to preview some of the tag sale items. Tickets will be sold at the door but advance tickets can be purchased at the church office. Litchfield Jazz Festival The annual Litchfield Jazz Festival will be held August 1, 2, and 3, 2008, at the Goshen Fairgrounds in Goshen. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., August 1 with music at 7:30 p.m.; gates open at 10:30 a.m., August 2 and 3 with music running from noon to 10 p.m. Admission begins at $35 and up with children under 12 free on the lawn. Presented by the Litchfield Performing Arts, the line-up this year includes Bebe Neuwirth, Paquito D'Rivera, Dave Brubeck, John Pizzarelli Quartet with an orchestra for a special 90-minute show "The Frank Sinatra Songbook" and more. Bats Alive! Bats Alive!, a program presented by Cheri Collins, a mammalogist and member of the CT State Museum of Natural History staff, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., August 1, 2008, in Ashford. Learn about bats' unique biology and behavior and meet local bat species. Find out where they live and what role they play in the natural environment. Examine mounted museum specimens. Coullard Golf Outing The third annual Sgt. David Coullard Valor, Discipline and Vision Memorial Golf Outing will be held August 1, 2008, at Simsbury Farms Golf Course beginning with a 10 a.m. check-in and an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Tickets are $125 and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, bucket of range balls, lunch, steak and lobster dinner buffet, beer, wine and and raffle. Dinner only tickets are $55 each. Prizes include golf foursome outings, golf and dinner certificates from $10 to $100, golf clubs and maybe even a new car. Norfolk Anniversary The town of Norfolk will celebrate its 250th anniversary with two events. The first, August 1, 2008, is a Block Party with food booths ready to satisfy any appetite. The evening will include music for dancing, square dancing, a street jester and instruction in the art of stilt walking. Following the block party, a fireworks display will take place in the center of town. On August 2, a parade will begin at 4 p.m. with the theme "Norfolk Through the Years." Concluding the day's event is a band concert of Americana music performed by the U.S. Coast Guard Band at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Shed. It is free. Information, www.norfolkct.org.

Animal Fundraiser The orange Ale House, 517 Boston Post Road, will host a fundraiser to benefit the Milford Animal Control's Building Fund, Milford Animal Control's Pet Food Bank and the Connecticut Humane Society from noon to 6 p.m., August 2, 2008. Admission is $15 and includes a car wash by Orange Ale House employees, hotdog or hamburger and a beverage. There will be information on the animal organizations benefitting for the event. 'Noodles' a Comedy "Noodles" a family comedy, will be presented by Theatre Newington-OnStage, at 8 p.m., August 2, and 2 p.m., August 3, 2008, at the Scottish Rite Auditorium, 207 Deming Street, Newington. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for students 18 and under, and senior citizens 62 and older; group rates at $12 per person for parties of 10 and more. There are no refreshments allowed or sold in the building. The play centers on the Boodle family, filled with eccentric folks who may bear more than a passing resemblance to some of your own "nearest and dearest." They embody family. Book Sale A Book Sale and Silent Auction will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., August 2, 2008, at the Killingworth Library, Route 81 north of Route 80, in Killingworth. Admission is free. Benefit Cruise The 7th annual Cruise to benefit The Melanoma Research Foundation will be held from noon to 5 p.m., August 2, 2008, at Don Mallon Chevrolet dealership, Route 32, Norwich. The event honors the late Kathy Domijan who died in October 2001, from melanoma. It is run by her family and friends. Admission is free. Over $60,000 had been raised in the six years of the event. Support the Troops Ride The fourth annual Support the Troops Ride to benefit the PFC Anthony D'Agostino Memorial Fund, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., August 3, 2008, from the commuter parking lot, exit 42, off Route 8, Torrington. It will finish at Riders' Cafe with a barbecue, raffles and live music. The fee is $25 per bike. Information, 860-480-1735.

Cycling Tour Tour of the Litchfield Hills Cycling Tour will be held beginning at 7 a.m., August 3, 2008, beginning and ending at Coe Park in Torrington. Proceeds benefit the The Center for Cancer Care Fund. The tour consists of 12, 30, 50 and 75-mile routes and the newly added 100-mile course. There are also 2.4, 4.2 and 8-mile walking routes for non-cyclists who wish to participate. The day ends with a picnic. All cycling routes follow paved, lightly traveled roads throughout Litchfield County supported with rest stops and support vehicles. Scott's Walk "Come Rock at Scott's Walk," a walk to benefit Scott Spalding, a 16-year-old sophomore at Woodstock Academy, will be held at 10 a.m. August 3, 2008, at the track at St. Marie Greenhalgh Football Field in Putnam. There will be a live band and a raffle. Spaulding, the son of Annette Martel and Wayne Spalding, was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in September, 2006. Information, 1-508-380-9594.

National Night Out Hartford Areas Rally Together, The Hartford Police Department and the Office of the Mayor will hold National night Out 2008, celebrating Hartford's neighborhoods, from 5 to 8 p.m., August 5, 2008, at Pope Park. This is the 25th annual event which celebrartes the success of Neighborhood Watch Groups and stresses the importance of a strong relationship between citizens and the emergency personel that serve them. Flea Market/Crafts/ Collectibles The East Lyme Historical Society will host its annual Flea Market/Crafts and Collectibles Sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 5 and 6, 2008, at the Thomas Lee House, West Main Street, Niantic, 1/4 mile north of the Rocky Neck Connector off I-95. Hiroshima Vigil A vigil commemorating the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima will be held from 8 to 8:30 a.m., August 6, 2008, at the New Haven Green flagpole. It is free. It marks the 63rd anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and calls for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Sponsored by the Greater New Haven Peace Council/New Haven Peace Commission. Plant Science Open House The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station will hold its 98th Plant Science Day open house beginning at 11:15 a.m., August 6, 2008, in the main tent on the Lockwood Farm in Hamden. The program runs until 4 p.m. Steve Grant, staff writer at The Hartford Courant, will give the Samuel W. Johnson Memorial lecture entitled "Are We Making Progress." Other speakers are planned. Paint-a-Thon Open Doors Paint-a-Thon will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., September 6, 2008, on the Milford Town Green. This outdoor event invites artists of any age to an outdoor painting festival. Lyme Disease "Under Our Skin: The Untold Story of Lyme Disease," will be held at 6:30 p.m., August 7, 2008, at the University of New Haven, Dodds Theater, main campus. 'Much Ado About Nothing' The Shoreline Arts Alliance will present this summer's Shakespeare fare, "Much Ado About Nothing," on the beautiful Guilford Green at 7:30 p.m., August 7 to 10, 2008, with a preview performance August 6. The play is a romantic comedy with music set to the 1970s. The audience is encouraged to bring picnics, blankets and chairs with concessions also available. Golf Tournament The Jeff Cariglia Memorial Golf Tournament will be played August 7, 2008, at Mohegan Sun Country Club in Baltic. Registration begins at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. is tee-off. The cost is $200 per player and sponsorship opportunities are available. Proceeds benefit the M. Jeffrey Memorial Golf Scholarship at the University of Connecticut. Cariglia of Lebanon died at age 40 following a five-year battle with cancer. He was an avid golfer, club champion. Gallery Opening "Points of Departure," is opening at the Charter Oak Cultural Center, large gallery, 21 Charter Oak Avenue, Hartford, at 5:30 p.m., August 7, 2008, featuring work by Stanwyck Cromwell. This year's activities include spin art, sand art, make your own jewelry and temporary tattoos. There will be a karate performance, a clown and magician, state police and local fire department demonstrations in driving anf fire safety. There will be a 22-foot slide, a rock climbing wall. Cut-a-Thon A Cut-a-Thon Fundraiser to benefit the Susan G. A small army of volunteers prepare the "all-you-can-eat" meal served family-style.
