Children's Literature The Shoreline Arts Alliance has announced the 10th annual New Voices in Children's Literature: Tassy Walden Awards Competition. The contest encourages and nurtures the creation and publication of exceptional quality books for children by unpublished Connecticut writers and illustrators. Entrants' work is considered for review by nationally recognized literary agents, editors, and art directors pursuant to children's book publishing industry standards and guidelines. An award of $250 is presented to the winner in each category: picture book text only, illustrated picture book, illustrator's portfolio, middle grade novel and young adult/teen novel. Sheila Tintera, both pol painter and printmaker, will show new works featuring horses as reflected in time and culture, past and present. Equine artist and photographer Juliet Harrison will exhibit media that embodies the elements of texture, contrast, shad and shadow and the beauty of the horse. Male Partner Violence Janel M. Leone, assistant professor of child and family studies at the College of Human Ecology at Syracuse University, will present a lecture on "Male Partner Violence Against Women: Health Consequences and Victim, Help Seeking." Family Barbecue A Family barbecue to benefit the Cynthia A. Carano Memorial Fund will be held from noon to 5 p.m., October 4, 2009, at the Preston Community Park, Route 117, Preston. Mural Project Exhibit The American Mural project will create the sing largest piece of indoor collaborative artwork around the country. A mixed-media painting and relief sculpture, it will ultimately be housed in the Whiting Mills Complex in Winsted and will measure 120-feet long and five stories high and up to 10-feet deep.
