Students Discuss Athletes' Punishment

Students Cited For Underage Drinking

Students and officials are discussing how underage students caught drinking at a party should be disciplined.

Police cited 50 underage people for drinking at a party last weekend in North Branford. Police were alerted to the party by a tip.

Many of those cited are students at Branford High School, including some student athletes. Now school officials are deciding how to discipline the students involved.

The school's students seem to have mixed feelings on whether student athletes should be punished by the school for underage drinking.

"They should still be punished for what they did, especially if they're on a team. They should be suspended from it or thrown off the team," said Branford senior Daniela Vitelo.

Junior Bonnie Colburn disagreed.

"You're a teenager and you're going to experience things, and I don't think you should be punished for experiencing things. They got punished enough by the cops, it's enough trouble, the school shouldn't get involved in it," Colburn said.

Branford's superintendent said that no action has been taken against any of the students involved. She said that when it comes to off-campus issues, the school takes action against students only when the conduct causes a severe disruption to school itself.

There is an athletic department policy prohibiting substance abuse, but the school's investigation is still under way to determine whether any athletes will be punished.
