SEYMOUR, Conn. -- Educators in Seymour hope to have Breathalyzers for the semi-formal dance in March. Some parents have mixed feelings, weighing safety benefits and privacy concerns."They know it's going to be there so it's not like they're being surprised," said Dan Rainville, a Seymour High School parent."I think it's a good idea and a bad idea at the same time," said Bob Piccolo, a Seymour High School parent. "I think the drinking and driving outweighs the privacy issue. I don't want a high school kid drunk to smash into me and my family."
The parents said they're not 100 percent comfortable with the idea of school workers monitoring their children."The only problem is I think it might force the kids to go off premises to do their drinking and maybe not go to the dance at all. So, it could have a negative impact," Rainville said. Some parents feel the responsibility for keeping their kids in line, begins at home."It's my job to watch my kids and do a good job. It's my job to teach them their values and what's right and what's wrong and then to send them out there," Piccolo said."I think the parents have to parent first and foremost, but the schools also have to look out for their own liabilities, and if we can help the kids to stay on the right track, whether it's through the school or through the parents, it's all a good thing," Rainville said.Students would only be given the test if there is a reasonable suspicion that they're under the influence, district officials said. The Board of Education's attorneys are reviewing the policy, which could be in place by March.
