Teachers To Undergo Rigorous Testing

New State Teachers To Prove Reading Ability

Changes are on the way for new teachers in Connecticut.

Gaining teacher certification will soon come with added requirements. Come next July, teachers will have to prove that they know how to teach reading.

After July, aspiring childhood development and elementary school teachers will have to take a rigorous test to prove their skills.

Education officials said that reading is not getting enough attention from teachers. Research shows that effectively teaching reading requires knowing exactly how to break down a language system and explain the pieces to children.

Administrators said that the declining test scores show that teachers aren't doing enough.

"They did a survey recently saying literacy rates are down," said Windsor parent Everett Morgan. "So anything they can do to get them back up is good."

Massachusetts currently requires the same test for teachers.

The cost of the test will be covered by the testing fee that teachers already pay.
