WATERBURY, Conn. -- Board of Education members in Waterbury said they're alarmed by reports that some custodians are pulling in up to $80,000, with $50,000 of that being overtime pay.Officials said custodians in Waterbury schools make $25,000 to $30,000 per year -- until overtime is factored in.The Waterbury Board of Education said it asked the superintendent's office to put everyone's pay on paper based pay and overtime. The report said one custodian at Rotella Elementary School that makes $30,000 per year pulled in $51,000 in overtime last year. It also showed that a custodian at Wilby High School that makes almost $25,000 per year pulled in $19,000 last year. The school district said the biggest problem is custodians have to be at all activities in all school buildings, even on nights and weekends. Also, officials said, over the past year they've been down more than a dozen people.Board of Education commissioners said they're looking into the issue, mainly to see if the work needs to be split up more evenly.Commissioners met Tuesday night and discussed changing the procedures for working overtime, requiring manager approval before you do the work.
