Bloomfield Salutatorian Overcomes Disability

Senior Headed To UConn To Become Zoologist

UPDATED: 7:55 pm EDT June 8, 2009

Bloomfield High School senior and salutatorian David Rojas knows everything about animals and their anatomy.

Listening to Rojas talk about the animals at the school’s agricultural sciences building is nothing short of a miracle. Not only is Rojas legally blind, but he suffers from a rare neurological disorder that affected his ability to write and formulate words. For a long time, Rojas said he was embarrassed to speak.

In middle school Rojas used a computer to communicate with teachers and other students, but has gradually improved his speaking ability to the point where he now only uses the computer for note taking.

While the special education department has helped accommodate Rojas’ physical needs, he has continued to take a heavy academic course load throughout high school, including multiple honors and AP classes.

“During the beginning of high school I struggled with adjusting to my classes, but then soon I made high honor roll every quarter,” Rojas said.

Rojas is graduating No. 2 in his class and excels not only in science but in AP English.

“In terms of poetry, he makes me go back and read the poem because of course, poetry is very interpretive and he often finds things that I don’t find,” said Bloomfield English teacher Evonni Gbadebo.

Rojas is also teaching himself Japanese and helps other students with homework.

Rojas is focusing on attending the University Of Connecticut, to which he received a full scholarship. He plans on becoming a zoologist.

Rojas’ mother said she couldn't be any prouder of her son.

“He didn't stop himself from being limited like other kids with disabilities,” Anita Rojas said. “The limit themselves with certain things and he kept on going.”

That is exactly the advice Rojas said he plans on giving in the graduation speech he’ll be delivering.

“To not become overwhelmed by your disability,” he said.
