BOE: Cuts Won't Increase Class Sizes

Teacher, Paraprofessional Jobs On Chopping Block

POSTED: 6:50 pm EDT June 15, 2009

The Wallingford Board of Education planned to meet Monday night to discuss out school budget cuts would equate to cuts in the classroom.

BOE officials said the cuts the district could be facing include three and a half teacher positions and 18 to 20 paraprofessional positions, among others.

But one member of the board said the cuts shouldn't affect classroom sizes and that the district's in fairly good shape compared to others.

The board said the district had a $1.5 million surplus in its budget for the current fiscal year and used the money to prepay for items for next year.

But some parents said the district should be able to find the money somewhere in order to pay to keep the teaching positions filled.

The meeting was scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mark T. Sheehan High School.
