HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Hartford Board of Education is expected to vote Tuesday night on whether to terminate transportation services for about 2,000 suburban students attending Hartford Host Magnet schools. It is feared that state money for busing will run out next month. The Hartford Public School System is discussing cutting the buses that transport students from the suburbs to Hartford magnet schools.Currently, students in 29 suburban towns and cities like Southington, Bristol, Windsor and Ellington are bused to Hartford’s magnet schools. The busing is mandated by the Sheff vs. O’Neil court ruling 10 years ago, which aimed to address a lack of diversity in Connecticut classrooms.Currently, the state picks up the tab of busing both Hartford students to the suburbs and suburban students to Hartford. The state funding that pays for the busing is expected to run out in December, causing Hartford to consider terminating busing services for the 2,200 suburban students.Canceling busing would avoid a $3.3 million deficit, which is prohibited by state law.The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy – one of Hartford’s magnet schools – at 5:30 p.m.
