NAUGATUCK, Conn. -- Nasty budget woes continue in the Naugatuck school district. Earlier this week one proposal made by the superintendent was to lay off teachers. Now, Naugatuck Mayor Bob Mezzo said that’s not necessary. Instead, he is calling for the resignation of the superintendent.Besides the layoffs of 60 teachers, the superintendent’s proposal included cuts in art, music and gym. However, Mezzo has offered another solution that he said will avoid losing jobs and programs. He still warns of cuts though.Mezzo’s proposal will mean $150,000 in cuts from school administrators, $100,000 from non union personnel and almost $590,000 of concessions from teachers. If cuts are made it will mean less teachers, oversized classrooms and less attention paid per student. However, Mezzo announced he has a plan to bridge the $2 million budget gap which includes the resignation of Superintendent Tindall Gibson.Gibson said, “I have no intention on resigning. I work with great people in the community and we will keep plugging away.”On Wednesday, Gibson spoke to the Philosophy of Politics Club at Naugatuck High School. He said in the last four years that he’s been superintendent , not only has he improved the learning environment but also Mastery Test scores. However, a few of the students in the classroom with him, agree with the mayor. They even began a student petition of a no confidence vote against Gibson. They said 200 signatures have already been collected.Naugatuck High School senior Lorena Gullotta said, “All the information I inquired I felt the superintendent had not fulfilled his duty and responsibility to get us out of this mess.”Under Mezzo’s proposal, aside from asking for the resignation of Gibson, he wants more than $830,000 in concessions along with volunteering to himself, take five furlough days. The 400 teachers in Naugatuck will be voting on the no-confidence vote on Gibson on Wednesday and Thursday.
