Rumble, Two Title Tilts Top Card

Listen up!Class is in session. The WWE "Royal Rumble" is history. You'll be shocked to find out who stole the show! That's later in this fantastic preview/review column, but first -- the rest of the card: Career Threatening Match: MVP vs. Ric Flair
What Should Happen:If MVP wins, Flair will be forced to retire. Will that happen so soon into the Flair retirement angle? Of course not. Nor should it. WWE has to milk this thing at least until "WrestleMania," or why bother?
What Will Happen:Flair won't lose. But he won't win, either. I smell a double-countout so MVP doesn't look weak.
What Did Happen:
Flair didn't lose. He won with a figure-four leglock, as MVP tapped out. Woo hoo! (I love this angle.)
Challenge Match: John Bradshaw Layfield vs. Chris Jericho
What Should Happen:It's JBL versus Y2J. In my opinion, these two have done decent promos to build up this match --especially JBL. Now they have to deliver in the ring. I don't doubt for a second that they can pull off at least a three-star match, with Jericho leading the way. It doesn't matter who wins this one because I'm guessing they'll be having a series of matches in the next few months.
What Will Happen:Jericho will win this contest to make up for his loss against Randy Orton in the last WWE PPV.
What Did Happen:
A bloodied Chris Jericho got disqualified, so JBL got the victory. As I said, this is only round one.
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Edge (c) vs. Rey Mysterio
What Should Happen: Rey as the No. 1 contender came out of nowhere, really. Should he be given the chance to carry the belt again? Of course he should. Is the time right just this second? I'm not so sure about that. I'm not a big fan of passing the belt around -- and Edge is doing a stellar job of being the creepy heel.
What Will Happen:Edge will keep his title, perhaps getting an assist from Vickie Guerrero.
What Did Happen:
Yep, Vickie took a 619 for Edge, helping her boyfriend keep his belt. Edge wins.
WWE Championship Match: Randy Orton (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
What Should Happen: The fans love Jeff Hardy, but I have a hard time thinking he's going to be WWE champion heading into "WrestleMania." It's just not going to happen. I could see Hardy being in the main event at WM24, but probably as part of a triple-threat match should the winner of the Royal Rumble want to go after Orton's crown.
What Will Happen: This one is a lock. Orton will retain his belt.
What Did Happen:
Orton beat Hardy cleanly with an RKO, retaining his championship.
Royal Rumble Match:
What Should Happen: I'd really like to see Shawn Michaels get a shot at the gold. Or perhaps Mr. Kennedy. You know, even Finlay wouldn't be a bad choice. That guy works his tail off week in, week out. But this is Triple H's stepping stone to getting his title back, pure and simple. Is that what should happen? I'd buy into an Orton/Triple H main event at "WrestleMania." Or better yet, Orton, Trips and Jeff Hardy in a three-way match.
What Will Happen: Triple H will win the 2008 Royal Rumble.
What Did Happen:Triple H was the 29th entrant. The early-returning John Cena was the 30th. Cena then eliminated HHH to win the Rumble. He'll get a title shot at "WrestleMania 24." Shocker!
Well, I guess I didn't see that one coming. Nice swerve, WWE! I also didn't see a DQ coming in the JBL-Y2J match. Oh well, the other three matches I called perfectly. As usual. If you're looking for more 'rasslin thrills, don't forget to download Episode 63 of "Old School, New School" -- the Professor Wrestling podcast.
