An exhibit detailing the Titanic is scheduled to open in Hartford 96 years after the ship set off on its fateful maiden voyage.

This weekend, "Titanic -- The Artifact Exhibition" opens for a limited engagement at the XL Center in Hartford.

Exhibit Features Titanic's Relics

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Dan Kain reported that the exhibit begins with the building of the ship in a Belfast shipyard, and ends with the ship resting on the ocean floor.

The exhibit combines recreations of the interior of the vessel with personal items carried by passengers and artifacts from the ship itself.

Cheryl Mure of the exhibit said that visitors seem as interested in the small items, such as original China or money carried by passengers, as they are to the huge recreations of the boilers that burned tons of coal a day to push the ship at record speeds.

"When they see the personal effects -- the small pieces of jewelry, to the large pieces of the ship -- they realize this is a true story and it involved real people," she said.

The exhibit also features video displays of historical footage and the reclamation effort.

"We want them to have a personal connection to the story of the Titanic," Mure said. "We want them to remember the ship, remember the passengers and crew. We want them to remember what happened that night. We don't want the story to die."

For more information about the show, call the XL Center by dialing 860-249-6333.
