Everyday Heroes: Bob, Judy Campbell
Couple Provides Foster Home To Homeless Dogs
Every Saturday dozens of dogs arrive on a seven-horse trailer from a southern high-kill shelter, eager to meet their new Connecticut families. However, not every dog is greeted with a new family in the Glastonbury parking lot -- and for those dogs there are foster parents Bob and Judy Campbell.Thousands and thousands of dogs are put to sleep every year in the United States and an organization, American Lab Rescue, said it hopes to curb that number."We incorporated this past December, we're a nonprofit group all run by volunteers," said David Wolf of American Lab Rescue. "We work with rescuers down south who rescue anywhere from 30 to 40 dogs each, and then we post them on our Web site and on Petfinder.com, and then we adopt them out. … We decided to focus our efforts down south because there's plenty of groups up here that can help some of the dogs that are local."Wolf said that many of the dogs have been adopted before arriving in Connecticut, and are greeted by their new families in the commuter lot where they arrive.Bob and Judy Campbell have opened their home to the dogs that have nowhere to go after arriving from the south."We adopted our dog Rico from American Lab Rescue and that was two years ago and then after that we started fostering for them and doing home visits," said Bob Campbell. The Campbells provide the dogs with temporary housing until a permanent family is found."You do it for kindness, for the kindness out of your heart to place a dog that needs a home because these dogs would potentially be euthanized unfortunately down in the southern states," Judy Campbell said. "So we did it, like I say, to give a dog a home. We're the bridge that gets them there."The Campbells said that over the past two years, they have fostered 41 dogs. The dogs in the Campbells' care are then discovered by potential families on the American Lab Rescue Web site or Petfinder.comAnyone interested in adopting a dog fills out an online application and then pays a fee of $375 to cover all medical and transportation costs.Judy Campbell said that the organization is always looking for additional foster families, donations and volunteers to help the cause.Link: American Lab Rescue Link: Petfinder.com
