Some kids are using a new language that has danger written all over it -- without their parents' knowledge.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Katy Zachry reported the letters and symbols mean much more than one might think in the online chat and text world.

20 Internet Acronyms All Parents Should Know

If your child types #-), or %\, it's code for "partied all night" and "I'm hungover," according to a list of Internet and text message lingo list compiled by the Substance Abuse Action Council of Central Connecticut.

The group also warns parents to look out for LMIRL, which stands for "Let's meet in real life."

Parents Taught Texting Lingo

Parents who know the potential for hidden meanings behind the messages have taken precautions.

"He can't sign on unless we sign him on," said Laura Erickson, of Bristol.

As a result, the Erickson family computer is located in the kitchen, where the parents can monitor who their teenage son talks to online and what is said.

"I think most parents would be blown away to read their kids' MySpace page," said Bob Erickson, of Bristol.

Text messaging has become a virtual second language for young cell phone users. Over the last few weeks, the Ericksons have joined other parents in attending workshops to learn their kids' lingo online and over text messages.

"Most of the kids don't know what a roman numeral is, but they know these symbols like the back of their hand. It blows my mind," Bob Erickson said.

Some parents are struggling to learn the warning signs before the communication gets out of hand.

"They think it's harmless, just connecting to people," said Sue Doyson, a workshop director.
