Market Boasts Fresh, Hydroponic Produce, Officials Say

Dorothy Frasier said she’s thrilled that a Farmers Market is coming to North Hartford, especially since its Coventry Street location is so close to her house.

"Home-grown, it’s fresh, it has a good taste, too, and I'm buying tomatoes, and there is probably nothing wrong with it," she said.

"We can pick stuff so much closer to eating it,” said Mike Draghi, of Little Acres Farm in Glastonbury. “The tomatoes picked in Florida are 100 percent green, and you have to wait for them to ripen."

Officials said one of the things you can find at the Farmers Market is hydroponic lettuce, which grows exclusively in water. One of the advantages, they said, is that it last about three weeks."

But for growers to keep coming every Wednesday, they said, the customers need to keep coming, too.

Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez said he’s encouraging residents to tell their friends about the market.

"As long as they have successful businesses, then the healthy products will be available to us," he said.
