GROTON, Conn. -- A Groton mother received the call no mother wants to receive last month -- a call telling her that her son was injured in a car crash.

Kelly Hunt said her 16-year-old son, Cody, survived the crash and is expected to recover, but the road is long and medical bills have already hit the six-figure range.

Hunt said Cody was injured in a crash hundreds of miles away, in Ohio, where he had gone to spend the summer with his grandparents.

"He was alive and breathing, but they did have to do an airway," Hunt said. "He was unresponsive with no pulse at the scene."

Hunt said Cody, who did not have a license to drive, was with his cousin when he lost control of an SUV. The SUV rolled several times, crushing Cody's head and face.

Hunt said that when the hospital called, they asked her about her choice of which organs to donate.

Cody has had 10 surgeries and doctors plan to replace part of his skull next month.

Hunt said she is facing the expenses of traveling back and forth to Ohio to visit her son, as well as the medical expenses.

"I just received a bill from them last week for in excess of $400,000 -- just for the hospital," she said.

A trust fund has been set up through the U.S. Navy Credit Union to help the family with the bills.

In the meantime, Cody's neighbors at the Bishop Court Complex where his family lives are dedicating a basketball court in his honor.
