The Connecticut Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is hoping dog lovers will open their hearts and homes to stray dogs flown to Connecticut from Puerto Rico.

Members of the SPCA said there is an overwhelming population of stray dogs in Puerto Rico and that often times, the dogs don't have a chance at survival.

"There's stray dogs just wandering the streets," said Jen Sadlier of the SPCA Of Connecticut. "We're here with about 40 puppies that just landed from Puerto Rico. It's part of our effort to save Puerto Rican street dogs."

Sadlier said the SPCA has a high rate of adoption with the dogs and hopes that the puppies will find homes at an adoption event this weekend.

The adoption event will be held Friday through Sunday at PetsMart in Stamford, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit the SPCA online.
