SIMSBURY, Conn. -- The Selig family has taken the idea of doing something nice for mothers on Mother's Day to another level.Barbara and Sharran Selig said they developed the idea for the Mother's Day Giveaway as a way of thanking military families for their sacrifices, which may be overlooked in day-to-day life.Held in memory of Bill Selig, Barbara's husband, the two women plan to give pearl necklaces on Saturday to the first 1,000 wives and mothers of those serving in the military that can't be home for Mother's Day."We all just seem to go about our business, and we do forget about the wives, daughters, children of the veterans, the soldiers that are over there fighting," Barbara Selig said."We actually had a family meeting at Easter, over Easter dinner, because we have the other business -- we have Central Antiques and Bill Selig Ford -- and with something of this magnitude, we knew we'd have to get the whole family involved in it," Sharran Selig said. She said the family gave the idea the green light. She said the giveaway will go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with 500 pearl necklaces being given at the Simsbury store and 500 at the Windsor store to moms and wives and fiancées."All that we ask is that you come with a picture of your loved one or a little article about them, and we will be giving the gifts to the first five hundred that come," Barbara Selig said. "And if there is 501 or 502, we'll find something for them also."Barbara Selig said her husband served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, when everyone knew someone in the war effort."So we all had each other to comfort one another, but now, we just think we have forgotten the soldiers that are over there fighting for us," she said.As for the military personnel, they don't have to be overseas. The Seligs said that whether the loved one is in Kandahar or Kansas, their wives and moms qualify.
