Parents Targeted In Underage Drinking

Parents Of Underage Drinkers Face Arrest Under House Party Bill

In an attempt to crack down on underage drinking, a new law holding adults accountable for underage drinking that occurs on their property is being enforced.

This year will be the first holiday season that the law, called the House Party Bill, is enforced.

In years past, it was legal for parents to serve alcohol to minors on their property. Parents caught serving alcohol under the new law will face legal ramifications.

"It's a poor example for parents to set. If the kids know they're underage and shouldn't be drinking, that the parents are now saying it's pretty much OK, what are they saying to their kids -- that (breaking) other laws (is) OK?" said Debbie Hebert of Hartford.

The law is being backed by an $11 million grant from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. The money will be shared by 29 communities that will locally crack down on underage drinking.

"There were many times when adults would authorize or assist young people in obtaining alcohol to consume in private locations. Well, now that is unacceptable behavior," said Lt. Paul Vance of Connecticut State Police.

The grant money will be spread out over the next three years.
