Connecticut lawmakers are being urged to provide patients of chiropractors with more information on the doctors.

Britt Harwe had a stiff shoulder and sought treatment from a chiropractor, she told Eyewitness News. However, she said what she thought was a simple adjustment changed her live forever.

"I felt this wave, then I couldn't move," said Harwe.

Harwe told Eyewitness News reporter Susan Raff that after undergoing this treatment she suddenly couldn't talk or walk. At the hospital, Harwe said she was told an artery in her neck had been crushed and she had suffered a stroke.

Fifteen years after suffering the stroke, she has learned to walk and talk again. However, the one thing she will never be able to do is eat.

Raff reported that Harwe has lost the ability to swallow. Anything that she eats and drinks comes right back up. So every day she uses a feeding tube implanted in her stomach to feed herself liquid nutrients.

Harwe's husband said that out of courtesy to his wife, he does not eat in front of her. He said he eats when she is out of the house, so he does not remind her of the task she is unable to do.

Monday Harwe urged lawmakers to make chiropractors explain the risks and sign a consent form.

"I want to do this so other people won't end up like this," said Harwe.

Raff reported that a bill proposed at the Capitol, if passed, would create a registry of chiropractors, allowing potential patients to research physicians and see if there are any problems or complaints against the chiropractors.
