The search of local stores by Department of Consumer Protection food inspectors for White Rabbit Creamy Candy has led them to Bethel, Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell said Friday.

"I think it's pretty common, just like you would buy M&M's, you would buy this candy," said Jenny Chen, of East Granby. "That's definitely a big concern."

"On Thursday, one of our food inspectors found 46 bags of White Rabbit candy for sale at the H&K Filipino Store on Old Hawleville Road in Bethel," Farrell said. "Those bags have since been destroyed, as were the hundred bags we found earlier this week."

On Wednesday, Connecticut food inspectors destroyed approximately 100 bags of White Rabbit Candy found at stores in New Haven, East Haven and West Hartford.

"I'm very careful as to what I buy when I come in here, and anywhere, really," said West Hartford resident Peishin Arnold.

The product, imported from China and distributed by Queensway Foods Co. Inc., of Burlingame, Calif., was recalled by the company last week after it was found to contain melamine, a chemical is used in plastics manufacturing and as an adulterant in foods to simulate protein.

Consumers who have White Rabbit candy should discard it immediately or return it to the store for a refund. Anyone who has recently consumed the candy and has questions about its heath impact should consult their health care provider.

"We are continuing to keep an eye out for this tainted product and remove it from stores," Farrell said. "Although, so far, there have been no reported incidents of illness associated with this item, we don't want tainted candy in our stores."

Consumers with questions about White Rabbit candy may contact Queensway Foods Co. Inc. at 650-697-6633.
