ROCKY HILL, Conn. -- Salmon, tuna and lobster, oh my!Which is best for you, especially when you’re nursing or pregnant? Simple, just follow the color-coded chart released by the Department of Health and Connecticut Food Association.“The green column is the good column you can eat two meals a week,” said Brian Toal, of the Department of Health. “The yellow column is medium. It’s OK. Then the red column is Do Not Eat.”For example, the chart says salmon is in the green column, halibut is in the yellow and sword fish is at the bottom in the red column.DOH and CFA said the Healthy Fish Choice program is a guideline to stay away from fish high in mercury -- a dangerous toxin to the nervous system that can cause brain damage in unborn children. Mercury can also increase the risk of heart disease in healthy adults, they said.Fish-lovers like Patty McClauglin said the service is a great help.“I think it’s wonderful,” she said. “I think it’s great that you have this kind of a program. It’s wonderful."There are a lot of types of fish people eat, and the DOH wants to make sure people are eating fish safely. For more information on fish safety, call the DOH at 877-458-3474.
