Connecticut has become the first state in the country to regulate olive oil.

The state has adopted new standards for what oil should and should not be.

"There are fraudulent olive oils that come into the market without guidelines and regulations. You don't know what you are buying," said Angie D'Agostino, the director of sales for Sclafani Imports.

The Norwalk-based company complained about "doctored" olive oil that was made with misleading ingredients like soybeans, hazelnut and peanut oil -- which could be potentially deadly to people with allergies.

"Especially peanuts, children could die if they're allergic to nuts and things," D'Agostino said. "If you buy something, you want to know what you are buying."

The new guidelines will prevent products from being sold as extra-virgin and virgin oil if they use other ingredients.

Under the new regulations, if another ingredient is used, it must be clearly labeled.
