MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. -- A Middlefield chiropractor is bringing some new software to the state that he said could cure -- without medication -- those who suffer from allergies once and for all.

Resident Sarah Dlugolenski said that when there's pollen outside, she stays inside.

"I've always had the symptoms," she said. "I've had the runny nose, the itchy eyes, the itchy throat."

The 27-year-old Durham teacher said she's also allergic to dust and cats.

"I can't go over to anybody's house who has cats," Dlugolenski said. "I get really congested."

Then she went to Dr. Stephen Fowler for help.

The doctor said he's the first in the state to buy the new software from AllergiCare Relief Centers.

According to the company, the software combines the ancient techniques of acupuncture and homeopathy with the modern technology of lasers and biofeedback to retrain allergy sufferer's brains.

The software contains a list of the 50,000 most common allergies, the company said. It said a box is used to convert that data into radio signals to test patients for sensitivities. Once the sensitivities are established, another box converts that information into light signals used to treat patients with lasers.

"Almost everybody who's treated has the same reaction: 'That's it?'" Fowler said.

He said the system works for about 92 percent of patients.

Dlugolenski said she has gone through six treatments, which cost $40 each and aren't covered by insurance. She said the treatments have been worth every penny.

Pollen no longer bothers her, she said, and she's able to be around her friend's cat.

But even though Dlugolenski said she's feeling better, West Hartford allergist Dr. Marshall Grodofsky said it could simply be mind over matter. He said the treatment teaches the body to relax and ignore the allergies, but that they're still there.

But Fowler maintains that not only does it work, it can even cure people of irritable bowel syndrome, heart burn, ADD and autism.

He added that patients with more than one allergy may need up to a dozen treatments because the body needs time to reset after each treatment.
