A fourth death related to the H1N1 flu has been reported in Connecticut.

Department of Public Health officials said the victim was a resident of Hartford County and over the age of 40. They said the person had underlying health conditions.

"Tragically, this person died due to illness associated with H1N1 influenza infection," DPH Commissioner Dr. Robert Galvin said. "I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to this person's family and friends."

Health officials said the death occurred at Hartford Hospital.

"A patient with H1N1 virus, who was suffering from other underlying health conditions, died at Hartford Hospital on June 17," the hospital said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. We continue to take every safety precaution to prevent the spread of the disease to staff members or other patients."

DPH officials stressed that most cases of H1N1 are mild, but that it is still a serious illness. They said residents should be diligent and "cover your cough every time, wash your hands often and well, check yourself for flu symptoms and stay home and away from others if you are sick."

The latest death brings the H1N1 death toll in the state to four. The three previous victims were all from Waterbury.

The first, a woman over the age of 60, was reported June 2. The second, a 6-year-old boy, was reported June 11. The third, a woman in her early 40s, was reported June 15.

In total, the state has seen 767 confirmed cases of H1N1. Of those cases, they said, 28 people were hospitalized as a result of the flu.
