GLASTONBURY, Conn. -- Recent rainy days can lead to more than just flash flooding.Channel 3 Early Warning Weather meteorologist Mark Dixon reported officials have identified 48 species of mosquitoes in Connecticut, 150 in North America and more than 3,000 worldwide. With warm, muggy weather -- and significant rainfall -- all the ingredients needed to breed come into play.Usually, a wet spring means mosquitoes, and that is the case this year. Testing administered by the Connecticut Agriculture Experiment Station indicates the population of biting mosquitoes has more than doubled this far into the year.An increase in the number of mosquitoes could pose a problem as crews in Connecticut have detected the West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis and other diseases in the past. The risk of acquiring the West Nile virus is currently low, but it peaks in August and September. To breed, mosquitoes need water. So, residents are advised to get rid of breeding sites, including water-holding containers. Additionally, clean clogged gutters, turn over any objects that may trap water, change water in bird baths and clean dry pool covers when not in use.To protect yourself, officials advise taking precautions and minimizing exposure outside during the dawn and dust hours. Homeowners should also ensure that window screens and doors close tightly.Stay with WFSB.com and Channel 3 Eyewitness News for the latest Early Warning Weather Pinpoint Forecast updates.
