West Nile Virus Spreads To New Haven

Public Urged To Take Mosquito Precautions

Mosquitoes trapped in New Haven on July 13 tested positive for West Nile Virus, the State Mosquito Management Program announced Wednesday.

These mosquitoes are the first to test positive for the virus in New Haven this year. In June, West Nile positive mosquitoes were discovered in West Haven.

"This is the eighth year that West Nile virus has been found in Connecticut. The recent announcement of West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes in West Haven and now in New Haven should be taken seriously," said Department of Public Health Commissioner J. Robert Galvin.

"Residents, particularly the elderly, should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites during the mosquito season, especially in areas where West Nile Virus is identified," he said.
