A New Haven woman has died due to complications of West Nile virus infection, the State Mosquito Management Program said Wednesday.

According to the DPH, she had spent time outdoors gardening in the days before the onset of illness.

The woman is the second case of human-contracted West Nile virus this year. The other case was a Bristol man who survived the virus.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this New Haven resident who tragically died as a result of West Nile virus-related illness," said DPH Commissioner Dr. J. Robert Galvin.

"This identification of a second Connecticut resident with West Nile virus-related illness and the increasing number of towns where infected mosquitoes have been confirmed indicate a growing risk for human cases in the next coming weeks," Galvin said.

The Mosquito Management Program said that mosquitoes trapped in Darien, Hartford and Stamford last Tuesday tested positive for West Nile virus as well.

To date, mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in Bridgeport, Danbury, Darien, East Haven, Glastonbury, Greenwich, Hartford, New Haven, Southington, Stamford, West Haven and Wethersfield.

The DPH urged residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites as August and September are the peak months for transmission of the virus to humans.
