The governor made a trip to West Haven Thursday to warn of the dangers of West Nile virus as the state's sixth case of the virus was announced.

The newest case of the mosquito-borne virus is a West Haven woman over the age of 75.

State health officials identified the area along the West Haven, New Haven border as a "hot spot" for the virus. Officials said the hot and wet weather multiplied the number of mosquitoes 10 to 20 times this year, increasing the number of bugs carrying the virus.

At Savin Rock Community Center Thursday, Gov. M. Jodi Rell spoke about the dangers of the virus.

"Try to avoid being out at dawn or dusk -- be inside at those times. If you must be out, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts," Rell said.

Rell also announced at the news conference that spraying and larvicide control measures will begin next week in the hot spot area.

Trying to get the word out about the virus, New Haven officials on Thursday went door to door, handing out fliers warning residents of the dangers.

"I'm usually outside with my son a lot. It's kind of scary when you know it's in your own area. A lady died in New Haven," said Juaneta Graham, a New Haven resident who received one of the fliers.
