HARTFORD, Conn. -- It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Governor’s Residence, and residents are invited to immerse themselves in the holiday spirit. As is done annually Gov. Jodi Rell's home in Hartford has been decorated for the holiday open house. Tours of the decked-out domicile will be offered Friday to Sunday, along with plenty of entertainment.
The governor said the home truly belongs to the public, and hundreds of residents stood outside Friday morning to go on free tours of the house.
Rell said she really does sleep and live at the Governor’s Residence, but since she was in Nebraska Friday for a governor's conference, her son, Michael, headed the event.Eyewitness News Reporter Heather Hegedus got a special tour of the home with Michael, starting with the library.“Usually there's a desk right here, and this year they decided to pull out the desk and put the tree in instead,” he said.Michael said his mother’s favorite room is the sunroom because of its view.“A lot of the business of the state does get done right in here,” he said. “Right in this room.”Other important business happens in there, too, he said, like making sure everyone has a stocking.“My parents’ dog gets a stocking,” Michael said. And then there's the dining room with a very long dining table, he said.“My mom on one end and my father on the other end and they kind of cheered to each other,” he said.So which room will the governor spend Christmas day in? This year, Michael said, she'll actually be in Colorado with her daughter, who is expecting a very special delivery.“They're expecting their second child … Just like any family, it's a balance where to spend the holidays,” he said.As for this weekend, Michael said the governor hopes to jet back to town by Sunday to greet the last round of guests. For a full list of the weekend tours and entertainment scheduled at the Governor’s Residence, click here.
