The Smith family, which had its Christmas presents stolen from its vehicle last week, has received a warm response from Connecticut residents.

Since running the family’s story Friday, Eyewitness News has received several phone calls and e-mails from people wanting to help.

Residents said they were touched by the story for different reasons.

Donna Dognin, of Terryville, said she couldn’t resist donating presents after seeing the Smiths’ daughter, Jocelyn.

“We have a little girl the same age, a 15-month-old little girl, besides our son, and I think that's what got to me,” she said. “I know this year with Christmas she's starting to get into it, starting to understand the presents and the tree and everything, so that's what got to me.”

In Canton, members of the Southit family said they were moved by the father’s big heart.

“To me, that was the whole thing, that he didn’t show any anger to somebody that stole from him,” Gene Southit said. “What really amazed me is that he didn't have that anger, and his wife was more concerned about the health of the family. That was pretty awesome.”

So, with just a few gifts and a $150 donation from a Torrington man who wanted to remain anonymous, viewers are brightening up the Smiths’ holiday season.

Danielle Smith said she was moved to tears.

“Look at this,” she said. “People have been wonderful.”

Tom smith thanked everyone who reached out and touched their hearts.

“It shows just how great people really are,” he said. “The whole town has been really, really nice. People form all over the state I've been hearing from. It's been great.”

To donate a gift to the Smith family, drop the present off in the WFSB lobby at 333 Capital Boulevard in Rocky Hill or send them to the Reporter Leon Collins at the station, and he will make sure the Smiths get your donations.
