A father-daughter team is among the troops included in the Army National Guard sendoff held Tuesday evening at the Hartford Armory.

New Haven's 192nd Military Police Battalion includes Sgt. 1st Class Brian Young, of Oneco, and his 19-year-old daughter, Pfc. Samantha Young. The two have a week left to spend with their families before their unit works its way toward Iraq.

"It's nice to have one of my kids that follow in my footsteps, so far, and it's just nice to have her here," Brian Young said.

Samantha Young said she feels the same way about having her father with her, especially for her first overseas deployment.

"Well, it's something from home, so he knows what's going to happen over there, what I'm going to go through," she said.

Once their unit arrives in Iraq the Youngs said they'll only be able to see each other some of the time, since Brian Young is with the military police and Samantha Young works in supply.

But they will live on the same base.

And though she knows her father will be looking out for her, Samantha Young said she'll be doing the same thing for her dad.

"That's what my mom told me to do," she said.

"It's like I have a baby sitter this time," Brian Young said.

But Samantha Young's mom won't be left home alone. The Youngs have a son as well.
