New Britain 41, Bristol Central 30

POSTED: 12:47 am EDT September 15, 2007

Two old-time rivals met Friday -- one a team that lost the state's best player last season to the University of Florida.

The Bristol Central Rams visited the New Britain Golden Hurricanes on Friday night.

A year ago, the Rams had All-American tight end Aaron Hernandez, who graduated and went on to become a Florida Gator.

Scoreless in the first half, New Britain sophomore quarterback Rafal Garcarz faked out everyone -- including the cameraman. Garcarz then handed off to senior running back B.J. Aponte, who took it all the way to the house, putting the Golden Hurricanes on top, 6-0.

A high snap for the extra-point attempt forces

Kicker Tommy Phommalinh tried to run it in after a high snap, but Central's Dan Belfi stopped him.

Central later tried to come back with quarterback Matt Coyne airing it out to Matt Petersen on a long completion; however, the Golden Hurricanes kept the Rams out of the end zone on the drive.

New Britain topped Bristol Central, 41-30.
