Ansonia has won 27 consecutive games -- and the last ranks among the most important.

Not only did Ansonia finish another perfect season, the Chargers completely shut out fellow undefeated New London.

The No. 1 Chargers and the No. 3 Whalers met in a game that received the most buildup, aiming the focus of the Connecticut high school football world on Class S.

The teams -- two of only three remaining undefeated schools in the state this season -- met at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven

Ansonia ran 60 offensive plays, 54 of which involved record-setting senior running back Alex Thomas. He set a new state record for career touchdowns in the season's ninth week (More).

"New London is a great program. They came out and had the fastest defense on the ball I've ever seen. They did a great but we just came out and played our best game today," Thomas said.

But Thomas isn't the only Ansonia commodity setting records. The team's shutout upset against New London on Saturday nets the school a state record 16th state title overall.

Second-year Ansonia head coach Tom Brockett has yet to lose a game.

"We heard this was the offense we couldn't stop. We heard we couldn't we couldn't come in here and run the ball. They had every film we had, and they were going to do it to us," Brockett said. "Our kids came out and put up an effort like that. These seniors deserve to go out this way."

Game Notes

  • The touchdown pass from Ansonia junior Ronnie Bilodeau to senior Tom Pitney puts the Chargers up 21-0 in the second quarter.
  • Connecticut's "Gatorade Player of the Year" for 2007-08 football, Alex Thomas, rushed for three Ansonia touchdowns and 240 total yards.
  • Unbelievable but true: The high-flying, season-dominating Whalers had just 91 yards of offense.
