Seymour's Moir, Spader Top Tolland

Seymour 44, Tolland 34

POSTED: 12:56 am EST December 2, 2007

Tolland earned some respect in Saturday's Class SS state title game, but Seymour got the bragging rights.

The Tolland Eagles made the school's first state title appearance ever at McDougall Stadium in Trumbull on Saturday: The second-ranked Eagles took on the top-ranked Seymour Wildcats.

Seymour head coach Paul Sponheimer had some thoughts to share earlier in the week before the semifinals against Woodland. He wrote in an online bulletin board: "Our game Tuesday night with Woodland will be for the Class SS championship."

That was bulletin board material for Tolland, thirsty for respect and more.

This game looked good early as Seymour senior quarterback Rob Moir avoided pressure and found senior Richard Spader wide open for a beautiful connection.

Tolland, however, would hang around all night long. Tolland senior John Brow picked up a short touchdown reception on the goal line.

Seymour then answered with a familiar connection: Moir passed to Spader over the middle, catching him right in stride. Spader coasted into the end zone for another Seymour score.

The, the Wildcats started to pile up the points: The third times a charm in the second quarter, when Moir found Spader in the flats. Spader managed to tip toe the sidelines and just got the ball over the pylon for the score.

Seymour held on to win the state title, 44-34.
