MERIDEN, Conn. -- The city of Meriden is taking extra steps to ensure safety of those who attend the Stoddard Bowl Football game that will be played at the brand new Falcon Field on Thanksgiving. It doesn't take long while walking the streets of Meriden to realize that the game between Platt and Maloney is considered the mother of all traditions."You think of turkey football -- Platt and Maloney," said Don Maleto, who once played in the big game himself. The Stoddard Bowl is played every year between two teams in the city in a fight for year-long bragging rights.Maleto, who played in the 80s, said his father played in the first game ever."Caught the first kick-off in that game so I grew up with the tradition," he said. The rivalry in Meriden goes back 50 years, and many believe the city's train tracks divide the Platt and Maloney fans.Councilman Dave Salafia said the city is preparing its defense for a hug turnout. This year will mark the first the game is played at the city's new state-of-the-art field, which can accommodate many more fans than in the past."It's not a concern we can't handle," Salafia said.Police are beefing up manpower and shuttles will be used so fans can park at nearby schools and parking lots.
