NEW LONDON, Conn. -- More than 70 students were suspended at New London High School after walking out of class on Monday.

The students were protesting news that the school's football coach was being let go from his position. Questions about the coach's future still remain a day later.

Students who walked out in protest of potential disciplinary action against Coach Jack Cochran were initially suspended for three days. The suspension has since been reduced to two days.

"They still have to serve the suspension, they can't practice for baseball and other sports, but they did comport themselves in a reasonable manner, and I respect their right to express their opinions," said Superintendent Dr. Christopher Clouet.

Clouet said no decision has yet been made about Cochran's future.

Cochran is accused of breaking athletic rules by allowing the baseball team, which he once coached, to begin working out before the season began.

Allowing to team to work out ahead of time is a violation of CIAC rules and for the first time the CIAC has sanctioned a coach for what they consider unfair behavior to competition.

"There have been no decision made at this point," said Clouet. "No one has been fired or relieved of their duties or anything like that."

The CIAC fined New London High School $150 and put the school on a one-year probation.

Cochran was forced to resign as baseball coach and was told that if he violates any more rules, New London Football will be banned from postseason tournaments through 2012.

Cochran has been a lightning rod for controversy. In his time as a coach at school in Bloomfield, New Britain and New London, Cochran has been criticized for running up scores on opponents and was once arrested for fighting with another coach.

Students and parents have signed a petition in support of Cochran.

"I have been in New London for 26 years, and this one man has done more for these kids, even though it's just football, at least it's something that they can try to get a scholarship," said parent Crystal Smith.
