EAST HAVEN, Conn. -- East Haven High School officials said seven students were captured by a camera at a party with alcohol. The students are now being benched from playing their respective sports. Two of the students were also in trouble in September for drinking at a house party, officials said.Earlier this year, four East Haven high school football players and two cheerleaders were caught drinking, according to school officials. After the incident, the school suspended the students from sports for the entire season.Parents asked the School Board to revisit the alcohol policy because they found it to be too strict. The school system ended up reworking the punishment, and the students, because it was their first offense, only had to miss two games. The athletic director said two of those four football players now have to sit out the rest of the season as discipline for the second offense.“You got a second chance, you should have stayed straight; kept yourself clean and did the right thing,” said parent Paul Palumbo.Five girls on the soccer team were also benched. The school’s athletic director said the seven students were at a Halloween party and photos surfaced, showing the students near or with alcohol. Some of the parents who helped change the initial policy said they are upset the repeat offenders did not learn their lesson.“They way you bring your kids up, hope what you did that they do the right thing, and they think before they do an action,” said parent Roseann Bailey.Under the new policy, if the students commit a third offense, they will no longer be able to play any sport for the rest of the year.
