HARTFORD, Conn. -- It’s becoming a who’s who on the list of officials being called to testify before a grand jury in the rumored wrongdoing of Mayor Eddie Perez. The list now includes Chief of Staff Matt Hennessey, Hartford Corp. counsel John Rose and state Rep. Kelvin Roldan. The list also includes at least 20 others who work, or have worked, for the Perez administration over the years, according to documents the Channel 3 I-Team has obtained and sources who have spoken with the I-Team.List Of Subpoenaed Officials Eyewitness News legal analyst Steven Seligman said many of those called are probably not targets of the investigation."It's perfectly appropriate and understandable that a whole host of municipal officials who are familiar with requests for bids and the awarding of contracts, people who are beyond any kind of suspicion, would be asked to come before the grand jury to explain,” he said.Explaining how a grand jury works, Seligman said it’s initiated if prosecutors believe there's evidence that a crime may have been committed, but they can't get to the bottom of it through normal investigative means.A grand jury gets people to come forward with a subpoena, he said."A subpoena compels the physical presence of a person and gives the prosecutors a little bit more leverage when comes to attempting to investigate something," said Seligman. But all this testimony by people from City Hall has a price tag, authorities said, in terms of the legal advice many have received, including $10,000 in legal bills and $10,000 for legal advice.
