WETHERSFIELD, Conn. -- The Department of Labor said several out of state companies are offering to repair damage from last summer’s tornado and hail storm in Wethersfield, but they’re doing it illegally. One homeowner in Wethersfield is a union carpenter, so when the state Department of Labor shut down the roofing job there, he wasn’t happy. The state placed a stop work order after finding 20 workers there, with no valid ID and no proof that anyone was covered by workman’s compensation insurance. They said many of the workers ran when the agents arrived.A worker arrived to pick up a trailer owned by Aspen Contracting, the company that was knocking on doors in a neighborhood and offering to repair damage from the June storm that spawned a tornado and severe hail.Agents from the Department of Labor have been writing stop work orders all over Wethersfield.Gary Pechie of the Department of Labor said, “We want the roof’s fixed but we want them to work on a legitimate basis and not just bring a fly-by-night outfit in here to correct these roofs.”The Channel 3 Eyewitness News I-Team tracked down workers from Integrity at an East Berlin office complex. They said subcontractors misled them about carrying workman’s compensation insurance. They said the subcontractors will not be used again and the issue would be resolved.Jeremy Couch, the general manager for Aspen Contracting, said they had workman’s compensation insurance for the workers in Connecticut and they were determined to finish the job.The state said the company doesn’t have a policy that covers roofers and homeowners could be liable.Pechie said, “So it’s potential that someone who’s working there illegally without the proper coverage could come back after the homeowner with a private lawsuit.”
