San Diego Padres (6-4) At Los Angeles Dodgers (7-3), 10:10 P.m.

(Sports Network) - An excellent pitching matchup is on tap tonight, as Jake Peavy and the San Diego Padres play the second game of their three-game series tonight with Jason Schmidt and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine.

Peavy makes his third start of the season tonight. The right-hander has been rock-solid through his first two outings. He picked up a win in his season debut, throwing six shutout innings, and then was saddled with a no-decision last Sunday against Colorado despite giving up only one run on five hits in seven frames.

Peavy has had success against the Dodgers in his career. He went 2-0 in three starts against them last season with a 2.84 earned run average, striking out 20 in 19 innings. The righty is 6-1 all-time over 13 starts against LA with a 2.40 ERA.

Schmidt, meanwhile, hopes to rebound after his first loss of the season on Monday. The righty was tagged for four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits through four frames before leaving the game with tightness in his right hamstring. Schmidt struck out six in that game and has 11 strikeouts on the young season.

He has faced the Padres 27 times in his career -- all starts -- and is 11-9 with a 4.78 ERA. That includes a 1-1 mark in three starts last season with a 4.95 ERA as a member of the Giants.

Schmidt will aim to duplicate the success of Derek Lowe, who pitched eight strong innings as the Dodgers routed the Padres, 9-1, in the series' first game on Friday.

Lowe (2-1) allowed one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out six, and Rudy Seanez pitched a perfect ninth for Los Angeles.

Luis Gonzalez homered and Nomar Garciaparra had two hits and two RBI for the Dodgers, who have won three straight and seven of their last eight games. Rafael Furcal, who missed the first nine games of the season with a sprained left ankle, was activated from the disabled list prior to the game and went 2- for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

San Diego starter David Wells (0-1) struggled mightily in his season debut, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out one in 2 1/3 innings. Garciaparra's two-run single in the fourth off reliever Mike Thompson ended a season-opening streak of 29 1/3-straight scoreless innings by the Padres' bullpen.

Brian Giles went 2-for-4 and scored, while Marcus Giles and Adrian Gonzalez each had a hit as San Diego lost for the second time in three games.

Los Angeles will try for its third straight win over San Diego in the series, which the Padres won 13-5 last season.
