POSTED: 2:33 pm EDT July 6, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals acquired infielder/outfielder Ryan Freel from the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named and cash considerations.

Freel was designated for assignment by Chicago on July 2 and has struggled to a .140 average in just 23 games this season for the Orioles and Cubs.

The 33-year-old has played most of his career with the Cincinnati Reds, posting three homers, 28 runs batted in and a .277 batting average in 143 games for the team in 2004. He was traded this past offseason from Cincy to Baltimore after spending six seasons with the Reds.

For his career, spanning parts of eight seasons with the Reds, Orioles, Cubs and Blue Jays, Freel has a .269 batting average with 22 homers and 119 RBI in 576 games.
